Allergies during pregnancy

Hi guys, I'm currently 18 weeks and suffering from pretty bad allergies related to my cats and a house renovation I'm having which has left the house pretty dusty. I called my midwife to ask her if I could take Claritin as the NHS seems to think it's okay but midwife said she didn't know and she didn't think it was safe. So I called my pharmacist and she said it's fine. Anyway I've taken one now and hoping for some relief but I just wondered if anyone else took allergy medication during pregnancy?

I also got a lot of conflicting advice re antihistamines and elected not to take them because my hay fever was much less bad than normal. However I was taking Claritin for a short period before I realised I was pregnant and GP said not to worry about that at all.

The GP did also refer me to this website that I consulted at the time: www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/ it was 2 years ago so can’t remember details except that it was helpful.

Ps: if your pharmacist said it’s fine then I’m sure it is!

I’ve taken it when I’ve had minor allergic reactions (so not long term), both GP and pharmacist said it’s fine

Not while pregnant but I had awful hayfever (hives and lip swelling) every time I went out after DS2. I was breastfeeding and antihistamines also not usually recommended. My GP advised me to take children's Benadryl which meant I could take a lower dose and find enough to control it. Worked a treat.

My doctor said loratadine was the preferable antihistamine to take if you have to take it which is the active drug in claritin.

Hi my ob-gyn said piriton or citrizine is fine. I take a piriton most days and did in my last two pregnancies with no issues.

Also been told piriton is ok to take. I'm 14 weeks and broken our in a weird rash on my back and arms today so currently trying to dig some out!
