Hello, we’ve got our 12 week scan next Thursday, they’ll be doing the tests for Down’s syndrome / Edward’s / the other one beginning with p I’ve forgotten the name of.. but no where on the website does it tell me when the results are made clear to us?
Is it something the sonographer can tell us there and then in the room? Or do they do the measurements etc and then send away the info and get back to us?
Was just hoping to be able to tell friends and family next Thursday about the baby, but obviously don’t want to until we know everything ok

No you don't get the results then and there. In our trust they phone you if it's bad news but get a letter if the results are normal. I got the letter within a week both times.

In our trust, you had the screening blood test before the scan (i think at 10weeks?) and then after the scan at 12w, you went back to the waiting room and they gave you the results 10-15mins later on a printed letter. Have you already had your screening bloods, OP?

Oh yes, had the screening bloods about 2 weeks ago - is that what tests for downs etc? I thought they measured some mucus something near the spine at the actual scan?

The risk factors are a combination of the NT measurement (back of baby’s neck) which they take at the scan, your blood results which are either taken at the scan or at a different time and maternal age. I had my scan and bloods at the same time and received a letter approx 10 days after. If there are any issues that mean further tests are required my trust said they call asap usually within 3 or 4 working days.

Ah ok, thanks everyone. Seems like we won’t be sharing the news before Christmas!

Hi in my trust you have the blood test done the same day as your 12 week scan, the my said they’ll call within a week if they need to investigate further. I had the blood test and scan done on a Tuesday and the day after the results were on the pregnancy app (they told me to download) and also received a letter with the results 4 days after.

I had my bloods at 10 weeks and got the results once it had been combined with the measurements in the scan room on the same day. So it may depend where you are

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 17/12/2021 18:34

Oh ok rather, hopefully then the blood results will have been sent into the hospital beforehand by my midwife. May just give her a ring tomorrow and see what they say

It’s never instant as they have to run an algorithm to calculate your personalised result. You can certainly ask the sonographer what the fluid measurement is though.
