Hey! I swear I have tried to find the answer on Google, and I don't know if I'm just being silly or if I'm completely missing it, but I'm blaming it on early pregnancy brain.

When do you first get to hear the heartbeat? Is it at the 12 week scan/booking appointment. Or at the 16 week scan?

I'm having an 8 week scan in 2 weeks time, and I know we'll not hear it then. But I'm dying to hear it soon.

This is our second pregnancy, but our first baby fingers crossed 🤞 The previous was lost at 5/6 weeks, really hoping we make it this time ❤

Hi I heard the heartbeat for this pregnancy at my midwife appointment around 18 weeks. With my first it was around 15/16 weeks. Then they'll do the heartbeat each time you visit 😊

Winnie87 · 06/12/2021 18:56

Wanted to say good luck also with this pregnancy everything crossed 🤞🤞🤞

We heard it at our 16 week midwife appointment, but we also had a private scan at 8 weeks where we heard it. Good luck with your pregnancy x

Not stupid at all! For me it was at the 16 week appointment. But (as my midwife kindly told me) they are only supposed to do this if you ask.

This rule was relatively new in my area when I was pregnant last year and I don’t think it’s country wide… but it’s worth asking if you want to make sure your hear it Smile.

Congratulations!

I had a fair few private scans, but first heard their hb at 9 weeks when I had a scan at the epu. Good luck with your pregnancy 🤞🏼

Myleo · 06/12/2021 19:17

I didn’t hear hb until 16 week midwife appointment

Rachipops · 06/12/2021 19:21

My 8 week scan is a private appointment. We'll be 8+4 by then, so maybe we'll get lucky!

That's also great to know to ask at the appointments too - I just assumed they would let you hear it if they could!

So interesting that everyone hears it at different times, it's true no one pregnancy is the same!

Heard at 6+2 weeks here, at an early reassurance scan.

If you have a low BMI/low abdominal fat- you’ll be able to have a abdominal scan pretty early. The abdominal scanners can generally pick up sound- transvaginal scanners sometimes don’t have the capacity for you to hear it.

fastandthecurious · 06/12/2021 19:25

At a private scan at 16 weeks we heard it. Some midwives will use the Doppler at your 16 week appointment but depend on the trust. Ours won't until 25 weeks.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 06/12/2021 19:27

I first heard the heartbeat at the 20 week scan for both of my surviving children.
I then heard it at every appointment and hospital admission after so about 5 times for dc1 and around 10 times for dc2.
After a premature baby and 3 mc in a row it was blissful hearing dc2s heartbeat. He was prem too but made it 3 weeks longer than his older brother

You can buy your own Doppler to try to hear it at home yourself? Sometimes this isn't recommended because if it's not used correctly, it could cause you to worry unnecessarily. I used it with my girl and it put my mind at rest. I think I got it around 10 weeks and could hear it then, it takes a wee while to figure out the best place to press the Doppler, but once you have the hang of it it's very useful.

I had a private scan on Saturday and was 7+6 and we heard it ❤️
