Hello,

I’m 5+6 and I’m starting to feel exhausted all of the time. I’m getting 9.5 hours of sleep a night and been having an hour nap each day.

This is sustainable whilst I’m WFH, but don’t know what I’ll do if this continues when I’m back in the office next year.

So, does it improve? Anything I can do to help myself? I’m on multivitamins but haven’t been eating that well but having a conscious effort to eat more of a balanced diet going forward.

The first trimester is exhausting. For most, the really extreme exhaustion eases sometime around 10-14 weeks. The second trimester is normally better!

Firsttimetrier · 06/12/2021 12:01

@mumofmunchkin thank you, that’s good to know. I’ve never experienced anything like it, I think I could sleep for a whole day!

As it’s my first pregnancy, it’s hard to know if this level of tiredness is normal. I’ve got my booking appointment at the end of December, so I may ask for them to check my iron levels if they can.

Sadly I wouldn't expect you to not be tired until your dc have left home..
Actually my adult dc keep me awake some nights!!
.

Grin Congratulations op

. Worth it honestly..

Swonderswoman · 06/12/2021 12:02

It's fucking awful at the beginning. Does calm down a bit and then get worse again 😅
I'd say perfectly normal. With my first pregnancy, I'd get home from work and sleep, wake to eat whatever DH had cooked me, and then go to bed.

Isabellabasil · 06/12/2021 12:02

Yeah it's normal I'm afraid! Most people are keeping their pregnancy a secret in the first trimester so you never hear about all this stuff. It's exhausting. Hope you feel better soon

TheEncouragingStranger · 06/12/2021 12:04

Oh bless you. It IS exhausting. I'm glad you're able to work from home. Take things as slowly as you need. Growing a person is exhausting! I found the second trimester much better, then the 3rd was more just weary (heavy bump to lug around!). But it will improve. I took naps and was in bed by 8pm with all my pregnancies in the first trimester.

Do whatever it takes to get through it! No need to try to be superhuman. Enjoy whatever rest you can get :)

And congratulations!

Sleepyquest · 06/12/2021 12:06

Same as @Swonderswoman but now I'm on pregnancy 2, it's more of a car crash Grin I'm looking forward to the Xmas break so we are all at home and can rest.

Second trimester gets way better, hang on in there !

Swonderswoman · 06/12/2021 12:12

@Sleepyquest "car crash" is definitely the right phrase! Second trimester here and not got any better (but am expecting twins so I have everything crossed your experience will be better!). Plus of course now my toddler has decided he needs 3am mummy cuddles 😂😭

Isabellabasil · 06/12/2021 12:14

Ah yes the second pregnancy is brutal, no extra naps, night Time waking, trying
not to vom whilst changing toddler nappies... all worth it in the end though Grin

Pamparam · 06/12/2021 12:19

Second trimester provides some respite from that bone shattering exhaustion of the first, before you get into poor sleep due to bump/aches etc, then you have the newborn, then when they sleep better, you still wake randomly through the night because you've apparently forgotten how to sleep through yourself! I've resigned myself to being tired until they leave home hahah

fallhappy1 · 06/12/2021 12:19

It does get better OP. I'm 12 weeks on Wednesday and it's starting to level off now. But it was bad. I slept 7.30pm until 7am the following morning and some days I'd need a nap too as I was just so, so tired.

Firsttimetrier · 06/12/2021 12:19

Oh you really are Wonder Woman @Swonderswoman ! I don’t know how I could look after a child and be this tired with twins! Incredible.

I’m just thankful Christmas is around the corner as my office closes for the whole period, which means I can just nap as much as I like.

I have done the occasional days working in bed or lounging on the sofa, but then get an unexpected video call which has me running to our spare room/office to take 😅.

Oh bless you OP, that's very kind. Just gotta keep ploughing on (and also just letting my husband do most of the parenting and housework!). Your Christmas plans sound perfect, I would encourage any expectant parent to spend as much time in bed as humanly possible, it's a bizarre thing to miss when you can't do it anymore. Tbh I think the first trimester exhaustion is way worse than newborn sleep deprivation, so just keep ploughing through this tough bit and you'll be well geared up for the rest.
