hi all just looking for some info, a friend visited today and said she hasn't been feeling too well so she took a urine test at her work yesterday (works in a elderly home) and the nurse at the nursing home said she had lots of protiene and blood in her urine so my freinds colleague(nurse) told her to make an app with midwife asap, she could only get an appt this friday which is 4days away, i have explained to her it could be serious and ask for an appt sooner, she has been having bad stomach cramps and says her urine smells strong, also her ankles and feet are a bit more swollen, its her third baby and she has reasssured herself everything is quite fine until friday, i'm not so sure and wouldn't leave it till then, anyone any expierence of this

she sounds dehydrated - that can lead to strong smelling urine and cramps......also, could be symptomatic of a UTI..hence the blood and pain, and feeling poorly..she should see someone before friday..... if she has an infection she could need ABs, and feeling unwell, with swelling and protien in the urine in pregnancy needs chcecking

As she can't see the midwife sooner she should make an emegency gp appointment.

i had cramps when i had uti she needs to be seen as soon as really!

thats my feeling too that she should make a gp appt but she is so laid back, i'm scared she will have an infection and go into early labour

She definitely needs to see the GP - explain to her that the chances of her baby surviving delivery at this point are not great and it's worth taking an hour out to get treatment. Also, I found cranberry juice helped when I had a UTI when pregnant - though I had to dilute it massively, it's horrid! But this helps with dehydration.

Also I ended up with pre-eclampsia so ignoring protein in urine is very bad, very bad indeed, particularly when associated with swollen feet, face and hands.

Gursky · 17/12/2007 22:53

Swelling and protein are not a great combo - get her to a GP!

Mawma · 17/12/2007 22:54

exactly that was my point incase it were something more especially pre-eclampsia, to be honest i want to shake her, turns out she missed her antenatal app on the 1st nov

After my last pg, if this was happening to me I'd be in A&E - just to be sure - rather than waiting even until tomorrow for a GPs appt.
