HCG Levels - Blood Test

Curlywurly3 · 03/12/2021 16:04

I had a blood test yesterday at 4+0 weeks and it’s come back at 36. Is this normal? Could it be a chemical? Could it be low if I ovulated later?

The number doesn't really mean anything unless you have another test 48 hours after the first one and compare the two levels of HCG.
The range of normal HCG levels for each week is astounding large.

Exactly as above, it's compatible to you only.

Also at 4 weeks, see the below range, you're only 2 weeks from ovulation and less from implantation, it could be absolutely fine! Nothing to suggest anything to worry about.

4 Weeks from LMP = 5 - 426 mIU/mL

4amstarts · 03/12/2021 16:14

I'm going to be really honest as I don't want to give you false hope and say it is really low. I've done a lot of IVF and I know clinics at 4+0 expect to see a level of 100 and quite a few studies have shown a minimum of 100 is the optimal number for best chance of a successful pregnancy. I'm sorry if that's disheartening but I'd rather be honest - I had 5 miscarriages and all had lower hcg levels than they should have at this point.

(That being said a lady on of the IVF threads I'm on had a hcg level of 30 ish with her son at this stage and went on to have a healthy baby)

Thank you for your replies and I appreciate the honesty @4amstarts. @AgentDavid I ovulated 12 days ago (11 days before the test was done) I have a short luteal phase. The doctor is going to call me back and I’m going to request another blood test on Monday

@4amstarts so sorry to hear that. Was that 4 weeks from LMP or 4 weeks from insemination?

Monday’s blood test will give the best indication. Unfortunately, nothing is a given in pregnancy, which makes it such a difficult time after fertility issues/losses.

carboverload · 04/12/2021 01:21

Mine was 30 at 4weeks

Curlywurly3 · 04/12/2021 14:08

@carboverload thanks for your message, did you end up with a positive outcome? I had bloods done again today so will find out later if they’ve increased. They did an internal scan but couldn’t see anything other than a thickened lining. I’m 4+2

HCG levels have a little more than doubled from 36 to 76 and progesterone is 70. I’m happy the HCG has doubled but still concerned it’s at the lower end. Anymore positive stories out there?! X

Aww it's looking good then so far! Early pregnancy is THE most stressful thing. 2 days after my 30 they were 70. I really don't think yours looks concerning. I had loads of early scans and took till week 8 to find a heartbeat. I'm 13 weeks now and all is looking normal. Could you have got your dates wrong a bit? My recent scans I'm measuring 9 days behind so I probably ovulated later than I thought xx

Curlywurly3 · 05/12/2021 07:34

Thanks @carboverload. I know I got my LH surge on 18th November and I know ovulation is pretty imminent after that. Apparently implantation can be as late as 12DPO and I got my BFP at 11DPO so let’s go with that scenario and hope for the best! ☺️🤞🏻 I’ve got constant cramping though which is really annoying!
I’m so happy to hear yours is a positive story, you must be so relieved 😍

Hi did you have a positive outcome in the end as mine is 31 at 3+5 so I'm a bit worries :) comparing again tomorrow!

Curlywurly3 · 04/07/2022 15:23

Hi @March23 unfortunately it didn’t work out for me, my HCG went up to 157 and then started to come back down again. I did get pregnant the month after. As other PP’s have said, it can go either way and only time will tell. It’s so hard though when it’s all you can think about. Is there a reason you had bloods done?

Thank you for your reply! Yeah I've had 3 miscarriages and I'm on cyclogest so they wanted to check my hcg on Friday to see how it's going. I'm only 4 weeks today so Friday was 3 weeks and 5 days. Been very bloated and had cramping on and off but not sure if that's normal. With my miscarriages I had no symptoms until I started bleeding. I never had positive test this early before. This time I got a faint positive test at 3 weeks and 4 days and on Sunday it was a strong positive so I'm confused that my hcg is only 31. Anxious to know if its gone up but just wondered if anyone had any successful outcomes with such a low result. My clear blue says 1-2 and has done since Thursday so I'm wondering why it's not gone up to 2-3 yet x

Curlywurly3 · 04/07/2022 15:56

These are the ranges of HCG levels. You’re within range and it could work out for you as it has for some of the PP

3 weeks: 6 – 70 IU/L
4 weeks: 10 - 750 IU/L
5 weeks: 200 - 7,100 IU/L
6 weeks: 160 - 32,000 IU/L
7 weeks: 3,700 - 160,000 IU/L

I really hope this is your sticky bean xx
