decided on a first name - which we both love and our v happy with.

for middle name, i want ro remember a friend of mine who is not with us. i shared a first name her, so not sure about calling her that. what do you think? also, i mainly used to call her by her surname, so am more tempted to use that. only problem is that the name is webster. it would have made my mate laugh, tho she would also have been a bit appalled . i told my mum today and she said that was a cruel choice. hardly cruel? my mum thought either my friend's first name (same as mine) or her middle name. her middle name is quite pretty but a bit subtle for me as i never really knew or used it.

just seen my our/are mix up first line. off to curl toes in shame.....

We gave our dd 2 middle names in remeberance, her third name is griffith, on my fathers side everyone has a surname as a middle name, its a welsh family,not sure if the tradition is welsh or unique to our family - in reality few people ever use middle names do whatever feels right

I don't see a problem with having a surname as a middle name. Lots of people do that these days. Not cruel at all. And nice to have a story to go with it.

Agree with Islamum - why not have 2 middle names. I think it is a lovely idea to remember your friend in this way - and the fact that it would have made her laugh - even better

My cousin's maiden name was Hanna & when she got married she called her first dd Hannah

Webster would be a cool middle name for a little boy!! Not so sure about a little girl though

my ds1 has a new curname9 different from birth that it) and that old surname is now a middle name.

if you are having a ds, i think the name webster is lvoely. it;s up to you what you call your children,just remember ghey have to live with it, but their ffriends might give them pt names like you did your friend

My dd has my surname as her middle name and plan to give it also to next dc (due after Christmas). Think Webster as a middle name is a lovely way to remember your friend - I don't have a middle name but would love to have one as meaningful as your baby will have.

I can't see how it could be cruel to give a child a weird middle name. Nobody need ever know if she ends up embarrassed by it.

If you were thinking of calling the child Webster I could see your Mum's point, but it's just a name that most people she meets in her life will never even know she has.

I think it's really cool to give her the name Webster in remembrance of your friend and especially if it would have made her laugh. As the name is so memorable (especially for a girl) your little girl will one day know all about your friend and it will help to keep her memory alive.

whatever you do....for chr**st's sake, don't ask your mother, or anyone else's, her opinion on your name choice......

Everyone has totally different associations, and with the mother daughter relationship being so.....delicate..... with daughters often wanting their mother's approval for some things, important things, or just about everything, you can end up really confused. Plus, when it comes to having a baby, your mother, or anyone else's often just take things too far on the opinion front.

Such a lovely and meaningful idea, which came to you from a special place. Why doubt it?

I think for a boy or a girl, it's absoutely beautiful..
