Conceive after C-section???

I had a c section for my first birth and when they discharged me the consultant asked me about contraception to which I said I'd arrange with my gp. She told me to wait around 18 months until I had my next child. Is this right? I have a high bmi (would this affect anything?). Would I really have to wait that long before even trying to conceive? What risks would I be at if I started trying or even caught accidentally before then?

Did she mean 18 months til you give birth or 18 months til you get pregnant. I've generally been told a year til. Trying to get pregnant to allow the uterus time to fully repair.

I was told minimum 1 year, but better 18 months to decrease chances of scar rupturing during pregnancy and labor.
I waited 20 months and had a succesfull vaginal birth.

I was told a year but know people who were told 2 years. I believe it depends on maternal age and also how the first C-section went.

I had my second 14 months after the 1st both C sections… they said there is some risk of old wound tearing but nothing untoward happened

Depends on how the section went, and what the surgeon saw when operating. You might have had a thinner uterus etc etc.

My first section, the surgeon (whilst stitching me) gave us the go ahead to TTC after 6 weeks. He said no less than 10 months between births.

Thank you all. I believe the c section went fine as I was home 24 hours later and recovery went well! However with the risks mentioned above I'll definitely try wait around a year until I start. X

DD was IVF and born via EMCS and the clinic wouldn't do an embryo transfer until after 12 months to reduce the chance of scar rupture. As it happened I got pregnant naturally with DS when DD was 18 months and had a successful VBAC.

I always heard at least 18 months between birth and getting pregnant again, because of the risk of the scar rupture, as PP said above. It is pretty serious.
