I had a m/c in 2005. My HPTs were positive, blood tests were pos but scans at 6.5weeks didn't show anything in the womb. I eventually m/c at about 7.5weeks but I had bled for abut 3 weeks on and off.

All very weird and never eplained properly.

Was awful because we were so excited - it was an accidental pg, I had taken the MAP and STILL got pregnant but no baby.

I am sure lightening won't strike twice - I now have a beautiful 11 month old DS.

FlossALump · 16/12/2007 20:43

I would do what you plan to do. I do know how you feel, many others on here too. You spend the first trimester on tenterhooks hoping baby will be ok. Good luck and I hope your m/w is helpful. Try not to worry.

deegward · 16/12/2007 20:46

I don't know if this helps, but a lady who used to work for me, when she was pg with first child was getting bigger & bigger, and had even bought pram, when she found out it was a phantom pg. She did go on to have two lovely children who are a few years younger than me. don't even know if this is the same thing thinking of you anyway

expatinscotland · 16/12/2007 20:59

it's NOT a phantom pregnancy. your body is producing pregnancy hormone. what it is is that either the egg or the sperm had an abnormality and did not contain any genetic material.

a sac is produced in the womb, but the pregnancy fails to develop, so there's just an empty sac, producing pregnancy hormone.

it used to be called a blighted ovum and it's very, very common.

what may have happened when you felt those labour cramps was that your uterus was contracting just to miscarry/expel it.

am sorry for you loss and hope you get some answers and an early scan.

moominsmummy · 16/12/2007 21:35

I think this maybe what's called a molar pregnancy - i got scanned for it when I had hyperemesis (severe morning sickness)

expatinscotland · 16/12/2007 21:41

a molar pregnancy is also different from a blighted ovum. it is another condition entirely and if a person has a molar pregnancy it is usually diagnosed after the contents of the d&c are analysed. in fact, i cna't think of a hospital that doesn't check for this.

and if this had happened, disney would have been informed of this because she would have needed a lot of further blood tests.

again, it is NOT a phantom pregnancy. it is a pregnancy which has gone catastrophically wrong soon after conception.

disney, have you spoken to your GP to make sure the results of your D&C showed no abnormalities?

expatinscotland · 16/12/2007 21:43

also, a molar pregnancy can be seen on a scan. if the hospital had suspected one believe you me, she would have been well informed because these conditions can in very rare cases lead to cancer.

in MOST cases, when there is no baby, the cause is a blighted ovum.

disneystar · 16/12/2007 22:15

thank you very much for all your replies il let u know tomorrow when ive seen the mw no i never asked if there was abnormalities and it was never explained either i will ask tomorrow you guys are great very reasurring to know you are there

I had something very similar last year and I didn't know what had happened either.I kind of assumed it was a phantom pregnancy or that something had "gone wrong" before it was developed enough for a scan.
I'm happy to say I'm now 40+2 pregnant with my first so don't worry xxxx good luck xxxx

walkinginaWILKIEwonderland · 17/12/2007 18:39

Sounds like you had a blighted ovum, the baby stopped growing very early on probably due to abnormalities so too small to pick up on the scan. A molar preg is when the sperm fertilies the egg and the egg starts dividing like it normally would. But in a normal preg when the cell keeps dividing they form to develop the baby. But with a molar they just randomly divide not actually forming anything except a growth, your boby thinks you are preg so produces the correct horomes this would probably show up on the scan and you would of had follow up appts as molar pregs are quite serious. I hope your scan goes ok

expatinscotland · 17/12/2007 21:30

If a molar pregnancy doesn't show up on scan it will show up in the tissue analysis from the ERPC and your blood test results will show abnormally high Hcg levels for the stage of pregnancy you were at.

Great news
xx

expatinscotland · 19/12/2007 22:43

Hurray, disney!

Good for you!

LOVEMYMUM · 19/12/2007 22:44

So happy for you.

My sister had a molar pregnancy when she was 24 (has since had 2 healthy children). I was scared i would have one too, so i asked for a quick scan at my booking-in appointment before the proper 12 week scan.

I kind of know how you are feeling.

Now, go and join an antenatal thread and enjoy your very special Xmas present [grin}

FlossALumpOfPud · 20/12/2007 12:08

Congratulations Disney.

Kezza7779 · 21/12/2007 23:51

HI, it sounds like the miscarriage i had 2 years ago was a blighted ovum, i started bleeding at 9 weeks and was scanned, found nothing in the sack, 3 weeks on i hadnt passed anything exceot light blood, they scanned me again and the sack had lmost doubled in size. its mad how the body works, i had D&C in the end as nothing was happening and i needed to move on nd put it behind me, i was absolutely gutted. This thread has given me a little bit of hop as after 18 months of trying again were pregnant. only 6 weeks but i have everything crossed. Its a very wanted pregnancy. I worry lots about mc again and more so of this blighted ovum thing hapenig again. should i request an ealy scan? whats the earliest that a hearteat can be seen / detected?xxxxx

disneystar · 22/12/2007 16:55

congrats kezza im sure if you are worried you can ask for an early scan i really dont know when a heartbeat can be detected by but im sure the others can tell you but im sure its quite early everything seems to be going fine for me right now except i have the most horrible sickness ever!!!! you know im amazed how many women this has affected and we didnt really have it explained to us properly which is terrible as we just worry all the more next time round i have foind these threads so very helpfull what a great lot of ppl i hope all goes well for you let us know how you get on please

gr1973 · 29/12/2007 20:42

hi kezza,

The same happened to me early this year so when i got pregnant again I arranged an early scan. The early pregnancy support unit at my local hospital prefer to wait until about 8 weeks but I understand that a heartbeat can be detected at 6 weeks. I was quite happy to wait until 8 weeks though; I was worried that at 6 weeks they might not see a heartbeat and then I'd have an agonising wait for another scan a week later.

Thankfully all went well for me this time around and I had my first 'proper' scan at 13 weeks and saw the lo doing some kind of headstand!!! Good luck.

lumpybumpymummy · 29/12/2007 20:53

this has happened twice to me positive hpts and postive blood tests but no baby
