Hi everyone

Can you let me know what your experience with the glucose test was ? How was the drink / how many blood tests did you have / how did you feel afterwards / how long results took etc?

I'm really panicking about mine on Monday, I have a morning of appointments starting with my glucose test, consultant appointment and growth scan..... I've heard it can make you feel really unwell afterwards??

Thanks in advance.. just trying to prepare myself 🥺🥲 x

Do you mean the non-fasting 1-hour glucose challenge test or the fasting 2-hour glucose tolerance test? I had the 1-hour test, had the drink, bimbled about for an hour, had blood test, went home. Drink was fine, not pleasant but it's just a drink, it's over in a few seconds. Didn't feel any different when I went home. Haven't had the other test because results thankfully came back fine.

Hope it goes ok for you,

Z

Oh forgot to add results took maybe 2 days? Can't really remember. Was at UCLH and they're pretty quick with blood work.

Well it wasn't pleasant but that's because I have suffered with sickness and nausea throughout my entire pregnancy this time and so it was a major challenge to drink (quickly, you can't take ages over it) and keep down the syrup drink, especially first thing in the morning. But I did manage it somehow and just kept telling myself it was a necessary evil and tried to think about something else. It didn't make me feel poorly afterwards but it turned out I didn't have GD so maybe it has a different effect on women who do.

My advice is to just get on with it. Don't keep stopping between tiny sips. Drink it as quickly as you can and just get it over with. You'll be fine OP Smile

Forgot to say, I had the glucose tolerance test so I had to fast overnight, had one blood test on arrival, drank the syrup and then waited around for two hours before having another blood test. Our hospital only sends positive results which is a bit of a shit system because you can't be sure you haven't just been forgotten or missed. But I checked with my midwife the following week at my appointment and she confirmed the negative result.

I went in & had my first bloods at 8am along with the drink (tasted sweet like lemon cordial but wasn't as bad as I was told). Then had second bloods at 10am. I wasn't allowed to eat from 10pm night before. Id just recommend taking a drink & snack for after if you have further appointments. Wasn't half as bad as I thought and the drink made baby move loads which was lovely 🥰

I then got a call by 5pm to say I have it 🙃

I didn't feel unwell at all - it was just boring!

Jonesy88 · 29/11/2021 18:01

No feelings of being unwell from me either. Just bored hanging around for 2 hours.

I had to fast from 11pm the night before, went in and had a blood test, drank the drink which to me was like undiluted squash, waited 2 hours and then had another blood test.

This was a Sunday, and I had my midwife appointment on the weds who confirmed it was fine.

mrscotton · 29/11/2021 18:13

I have this on Monday next week too and dreading it already. It took my midwife 4 attempts to get blood out of me the first time i had blood tests :(

WakeUpLockie · 29/11/2021 18:22

I was surprised they took a vial of blood rather than a finger prick test. But that was the only surprise really.

8am first bloods, watch tv/read for two hours (bliss! Peace!), bloods again at 10am. Results certainly within a week. The amount of drink seems extreme and it does not taste good but it’s easy enough.

Strange as I’ve been more or less the same size for every pregnancy but didn’t have a GTT in first, second I had one, this time I am having 2!! 16 weeks and 24 or so. Weird!

dg93 · 29/11/2021 18:24

Thank you all soo much! All I've heard about is how unwell everyone is afterwards so this makes me feel so much better knowing not everyone does!!

My dads type 1 diabetic and I have been testing my bloods occasionally when im with him, so unfortunately I'm pretty certain I'll have it but fingers crossed it will be alright on the day 😂 x

For those that had GTT, around when did you have it (NHS)?
I just been for midwife appt at 26 weeks and after leaving she called asking if I knew why I didn't have the test done. So far no midwife mention it to me and they have to arrange it! I am not worried as I check my blood sugars anyway and I am usually low despite the carbs and sweets... I do have some risk factors like being overweight and being IVF pregnancy... Now I have to wait for the booking to come by post 🙄

boymamax · 14/03/2022 20:29

@singlemomattc29 Hey! Mine was booked in at my 16 week midwife appointment for dead on 26 weeks x

singlemoma34 · 14/03/2022 20:41

@boymamax Yeah, apparently it should have been done then but they missed it. Now I am waiting for an urgent booking within a week to be within the 28 weeks or near... 😒

I only got tested in week 33 (last week!) after my scan showed baby was measuring big compared to last scan. As for the test, I fasted from midnight and had my appointment at 8am where they took some blood, (not a whole vial and 'fast' is a strong word as I wouldn't normally eat between 12 and 8am!) You pretty much immediately get the glucose drink which reminded me of a cheap capri sun after they take blood, so I wasn't hungry... I did however get wicked indigestion from the drink! I took a few mags in with me and the 2 hours passed quick! 5 past 10 i had 2nd lot of blood taken from the opposite arm from the 1st test. Results were fast - the same day, and I was negative. Fairly easy!
GestationalDiabetes · 14/03/2022 21:19

I had it at around 32 weeks even though I had been raising strong concerns for over 2 months before that as I was drinking crazy amounts of water and it didn’t feel right .
The test itself wasn’t too bad, I was just relieved to be finally allowed it. They confirmed positive 3 days later

GestationalDiabetes · 14/03/2022 21:22

In the perfect world I would have preferred a non alcoholic mojito I think than a sickly syrup in a a plastic glassful Grin

singlemoma34 · 14/03/2022 21:40

Well... It's a bit of a relief to hear that some of you had it later. The midwife and the info on the nhs and web say it should be done at 26-28 weeks that's why I was a bit annoyed for being forgotten and now having to book it asap which I hope doesn't fall on my working days... But probably not since my last shift is next Sunday! 😱
