How worried should I be about third hand smoke?

I have a 4 month old DS and went out with a pregnant friend at the weekend. She mentioned that she's stopped wearing leather jackets, or any items of clothing that can't be washed in the machine, as she is concerned that if she spends any time around smokers the smoke will cling to the material but she won't be able to wash it, and she is worried about third hand smoke (afaik she doesn't have smoker friends... so I think this is just about walking past smokers outside pubs or restaurants etc). She seemed surprised that I wasn't following the same rule given my 4 month old.

Is this a reasonable concern for pregnant women / new mothers or is she already going too far?

I think that sounds absolutely bat shit so I wouldn’t following suit, because I’m not demented.

Not sane worry (trying to be polite)

God no. I can see this would make sense if you worked in a smokey environment e.g. pubs pre smoking ban, but these days it seems OTT.

That's bananas.

My DH accidentally carbonised 2 separate things in the oven yesterday and the whole kitchen was filled with smoke while we flapped around opening windows and waving tea towels. I seriously doubt anything bad happened to the baby!

Madness.

Thanks - and good! I half see what she means that sometimes an afternoon / evening just walking around the city centre can leave you smelling of smoke. But surely if it were this much of a risk, pregnant women / new mums wouldn't... buy second hand cars / clothing / ever sit in an outdoor cushioned seat at a pub etc. Not sure how receptive she'll be to me mentioning those though as I don't want to introduce new worries to her!
