Measuring behind on early scan!

Hi all!

First time pregnancy here and worrying! 28 year old, came off contraception May 21 and only one "proper" period prior to positive test!

Know the exact date of LMP (23/09) and exact date of the "business" to conceive (12/10) with a positive test 20/10.

Recently went for a private early scan for personal reassurance (no cramps, no blood, no miscarriage symptoms!) only to find out that where I was expecting to be at least 7+3, I measured at 6+1 with 5.4mm embryo and yolk sac but no HB 😢

From my very very limited knowledge and all dates posted above, surely it's impossible for me to only be 6+1 ?!?! All I've been told is wait 2 weeks, if there's still a positive test then carry on with the dating scan as per NHS ... potentially 4 weeks of torment!!

I'm now worrying about a missed miscarriage - am I being dramatic ?! Has anyone else got any advice or stories?

Good, bad and the ugly - at least I can then mentally prepare!

I think almost everyone measures behind on an early scan :) it's really hard to get an accurate measurement of something so small when just a millimetre will change the estimated gestation by days! Do not worry, nothing has happened until something happens.

It could be a missed miscarriage, it could be absolutely fine.

I don’t want to say it’s one or the other- because when I was in your boat, I desperately clung to ‘it might just be too early to see’. Unfortunately it was a MMC for me with a small baby and a very slow heartbeat that stopped in the 2 weeks wait later. The positivity made the crash to earth harder.

I would wait a week then seek a private scan at a private clinic (this is usually about £80). At least you’ll have some indication sooner.

Was your scan transvaginal? Or abdominal?

Try not to worry (harder said than done I know) We're IVF and measured behind by a few days when dates and age of embryo were cast iron. With our first we had a heart beat before 6 weeks with this one we didn't but did a week or so later.

It's so hard to measure when they're that small that a tiny bit out makes the baby bigger or smaller by a larger amount. I'd personally go back in 10 days. CRL length of 7mm is when you should defo have a heartbeat but your embryo still has lots to grow to get there. In 10 days/2 weeks you should be around that size. Good luck.

Just from my experience, I measured a week behind too, I thought I was 7 weeks! I am now currently 39 weeks and counting down the days until we meet our little girl.

It also depends on your cycle length. Based on my lmp when I went in for my early scan I should have been 7 weeks but was only showing as 6, after a chat with the doctor she changed me to 6 as when I said my cycle lengths vary & I knew the exact date of ovulation she was confident I was only 6. Currently 11 weeks! Had the same on my first baby too in that scan (although they never asked for ovulation dates/cycle length so it was never amended).

You could still be less far along than you think. You don't mention knowing when you ovulated, and even then embryos implant at different stages. There's also potential for inaccurate measurements at that early stage. Hopefully it's just a mixture of things and everything is fine 🥰

I have my follow up scan this Thursday and I'm petrified 😞 Are you in the UK? If so, I'd give your local epu a call and ask them if they can book you in for a scan in 10-14 days. Let's hope we both have a positive outcome x

Not a clue when ovulation officially was/would have been! Didn't have regular periods as only just came off contraceptives - it WAS transvaginal scan xx

I've been a little naughty and told midwives a little white lie and so am being seen tomorrow in EPU 🤞🏼

Good luck tomorrow @FirstTimerHan! When was your last scan? It may be that there isn't a big difference in measurements but you will be asked to come back for a repeat scan if not much has changed.

Thanks so much! It will have been 5 days so enough to notice "some" growth so I'll know if it's grown at all or stayed exactly the same .... but if it's still small I guess I'll be rescanned again afterwards 😫 so stressful so early! Good luck for yours too! I'll update you xx

With all my babies I measured different on every scan I had. So for example at 12 weeks DC2 was measuring 14 weeks then at the 20 week scan, she measured something like 17 weeks. It was always changing bigger and smaller. Never spot on

I had an early scan at 8+ 4 weeks and was told I was only 7+ 5, at the next scan Baby caught up and was only measuring 2 days behind and now at 31 weeks they're goin by my original LMP due date so don't worry about it , 🤗

If anything it was smaller but defo no heartbeat. Just not possible to be that small and no heartbeat with conception date 😫 Will try again in the new year xx

How long did you leave between the first and second scan? Really very sorry 😞 xx
