Possible miscarriage at 5 weeks - help

Hello, I was hoping someone can help or give me some advice please.

I found out on the 15th November I was pregnant, I took various pregnancy tests all positive. I took another one on the 17th, positive. I couldn't remember when my last period was but from the date of conception I would assume I was around 4 weeks pregnant.

I've been waiting to be allocated to a midwife, today (at 4 weeks and 6 days) I've been bleeding heavily like a period and I've had lower tummy cramps. I went to A&E who tested my urine and told me I wasn't pregnant.

I explained to the A&E doctor that I tested positive only 4 days ago, the doctor explained I may have suffered an early miscarriage but my urine was not showing me to be pregnant. (I waited 2 hours in A&E with my urine before it was dip sampled, unsure if this makes a difference)

I went home and took another clearblue test which is showing positive, I took a first response test which also showed I'm positive.

I am still bleeding like a period but I don't know what to think now, if I was miscarrying/miscarried I know there is a possibility that there is some pregnancy hormones still in my urine which is why the home test kits are showing positive but then why did the hospital one test negative.

This is my first pregnancy and I am quite scared, I intend to call the GP in the morning and try to get an appointment.

Would be grateful if anyone has had a similar experience or any advice to offer me.

Thank you in advance

I suspect what they've told you in A and E is correct, i'm sorry to say. Depending on where you are you'll get different advice, I've found here (UK) you'll find it extremely difficult to be seen by a GP unless you're having complications or have multiple losses and need referred. You'll probably be advised to test again in 1 week due to residual hormone like you've said. Clearblue are terrible for false positives and FRER are probably more sensitive than the hospital tests. I hope you've got good support at home, sorry this is your first experience but it will be ok.

Hi OP, I'm so sorry you find yourself here and that you're going through this. There are plenty of amazing supportive people on here to help you through this, whatever the outcome.

After a miscarriage it can a while for HCG levels to come down, whilst they're still present you can still have positive pregnancy tests.

Do you have a number for the early pregnancy assessment unit at your local hospital? They should scan you to confirm and also check your HCG levels and whether they are rising or falling. The reason it's important is because even if you have miscarried they need to make sure that there is no tissue left which could cause an infection.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I've left a message with the early pregnancy unit so I'm hoping they get back to me tomorrow or I will try call them again.

A small part of me was hoping the hospitals test was incorrect but hopefully a scan should clear it up, I hope they can see me sooner rather than later

Did you get seen @Mib1990 ?

I think the hospital just used a test that was less sensitive than your tests. I'm sorry 💐

Thank you everyone for your replies

Early pregnancy unit rang me this morning after they got my voicemail I left last night

She said that they checked the bloods I left with a and e and that there are reduced hcg levels or something indicating I am miscarrying. She advised me to wait for it to bleed out naturally and that I may test positive on the home test kits for up to 2 weeks but if after 2 weeks I test positive then to go in for a scan as there may be some pregnancy tissue left behind that needs to be removed

It is sad news and as its my first pregnancy it is quite heartbreaking but chemical pregnancies seem to be so common and I need to remember a lot of people are going through it.

So grateful to you all again for responding

Just looking for some advice.

I found out I was pregnant on the 7th Nov, was only faint but then did two more a clear blue a few days a part over a week and came back positive. (3 positive pregnancy test) on the 17th (5 week 1 day) I suddenly started bleeding heavy. It lasted only a short time. It was a gush of blood and then a clot about the size of a 10p coin. I've assumed I've misscarried as had one in May at 8+4

This time the bleed was over in a few hours and just had a spotting of brown discharge when I wipe. The cramping was mild and probably lasted upto an hour.

However My nausea hasgot worse day by day. As well as other pregnancy symptoms.

Done two more tests and the lines are getting darker.

I expected my hormone levels to drop rapidly as in May by bloods the hcg dropped right back to zero in like 3 days. Its been 5 days now and I feel like my hormones are increasing.

Seeing the gp tomorrow for a check up.

Any advice or shared experiences would be great.

I've accepted I've misscarried but my friend seems to think I could be still pregnant etc
