Vasectomy reversal-any success stories

Hi all, my DH had a vasectomy 12 years ago, before we married. I have 3 children (21,13,12) from my first marriage and he has 2 (18, 16) from his.

I'm 41 and DH 47...we've now decided we'd like one together. Has anyone conceived after a reversal? Anyone conceived over 40? I'm aware people will think I'm mental but just looking for some, hopefully, success stories.

Everyone I know who had a reversal went down the IVF route as the longer it's been since the vasectomy was done the less likelihood that the reversal will be successful so with it being over 10 years it could take a long time (years) to see his sperm count return to a level required to get pregnant naturally and with yourself being over 40 already I'd say the odds are low....

It was also super expensive as reversals can't be done on the NHS

Hi OP.

My DH had a reversal 6.5 years ago, done privately, and I conceived on the following cycle. I proceeded to miscarry that pregnancy, but there's nothing to suggest that the reversal was in any way relevant to that, so I guess the conception counts as a success story from a reversal point of view!

Good luck 😊

(I think it had been ~9 years since his vasectomy)

Thank you for answering. I was weighing up the option of ivf...if we go for ivf or reversal we'd be paying privately anyway. I guess I just hoped we could avoid the invasiveness of ivf but I'm aware my age is a factor.

I'm the same age as you and, as my username suggests, we're about to give it one more go. We also have five children between us, like you and your DH, so we're in similar positions!

So nice to hear of someone in a similar situation!! Fingers crossed for you!

Honestly OP I'd go for surgical sperm retrieval and then ivf in your shoes. Your age is going to be a factor - My dh had a reversal 10 years ago and the surgeon put a lot of weight on my age as I was only in my 20s then. We conceived on our first round of ivf using sperm that was retrieved as a back up during the attempted reversal (which failed) and I'm now nearly 17 weeks pregnant.

My husband has a vasectomy reversal in June this year, I was very lucky to get pregnant the next month and I'm 17 weeks now. He had the orginal vasectomy 8 years ago after the birth of our second child and he is 40 and I'm 34.

Our surgeon said we had a fairly good chance as his vasectomy has been done very well at the time (after an examination) and we both had children together so we had proven fertility. He was an excellent surgeon with great results. We opted for micro surgery.

However we both went into it hoping for the best but ultimately understanding that it might not happen.

If I was absolutely determined to have more children I might have gone straight to ivf. The vasectomy reversal wasn't cheap.

IVF odds will be v low due to your ages and the retrieval. Likely to be a hard road.

CherylPorter350 · 18/11/2021 16:35

I'm having fertility tests run on me first before we decide..just to hedge our bets. My mum had my brother at 44 so I'm still hopeful

@CherylPorter350 do an advanced search for vasectomy reversal, and the username Derbee

berrycravings · 11/12/2021 09:23

Hi,

Just wanted to ask how you were getting on with your decisions?

My DH had a vasectomy 4 years ago, but we have decided we would like another child. Not sure yet if we are looking at reversal or IVF. I'm 37 so from reading it sounds like they recommended IVF.

I've booked facility tests for me to start with to guide the decision. Has taken us a year to finally decide to go for it, I am so nervous and excited.

CherylPorter350 · 11/12/2021 20:46

@berrycravings

Hi, we've opted for reversal, micro surgery, all booked up for February!! I'm aware I'm older, but all my tests have came back perfect. If it doesn't work then so be it but I just feel ivf isn't for me, personal decision.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Happy to answer any questions

X

Hi Cheryl, any updates! I have reached out to IVF clinics because that might be the quicker route to baby for us, however, if successful, vasectomy reversal might be more affordable. I’m following your story in hopes I can make an well thought out decision for us!!

ApolloandDaphne · 19/04/2022 21:23

My DH had a reversal and I got pregnant almost immediately afterwards. I was 35 at the time.
