UTI - how to get antibiotics

Getting an appt at my drs is like finding gold, however I’m certain I have a UTI.

I know it sounds stupid but how can I get hold of antibiotics (or other medication to treat it?)? Do I have to wait for a GP appt in about a months time or does this warrant trying to get a same day appt? My midwife appt isn’t for another 3 weeks although she did say last time I can book ad hoc appts with her, however I don’t think midwives are able to prescribe are they?

Any advice appreciated :) thank you

Try ringing up your doctors and telling them you know you have a UTI and don't need an appointment but need antibiotics, tell them you're pregnant too this shouldn't do untreated while pregnant. In the past they've taken my word for it and written a prescription I can just pick up later that day and I drop off a urine sample for them to test that it's nothing more serious.

Many pharmacists can now prescribe antibiotics for UTI’s.

Bigger branches of Boots now offering UTI testing and prescribing services. I think this is great, as agree getting an appointment at the doctor for this is often not quick or easy, and you definitely don't want a UTI hanging around any longer than necessary!

Have you tried to contact the Dr? I have had 3 utis in the last year and DS has had tonsillitis. If you put in an econsult you should get a call back from a Dr or nurse practitioner the same day who can prescribe antibiotics based on symptoms, or they may ask you to go in a provide a

This thing about waiting a month for a GP apt that people keep bandying about is unhelpful. It may be the case for some routine apts, but most GPs have a good system in place for accute conditions.

You can also buy them online from a pharmacy, but I'd advise against this as its better if your GP has a record of what's prescribed and will make sure you have a long enough course and the right antibiotics to treat the infection you have.

There are online prescription services as someone linked to^^

Or can you do an econsult? They can ring you back or else just prescribe the medication.

Ring your surgery, tell them your preg and you should get them the same day.

Pharmacists won’t get involved with UTIs in pregnant women. Every time I’ve had a UTI during this pregnancy, I’ve called the GP and they’ve just taken my word for it and prescribed me antibiotics to collect the same day.

First one they usually prescribe is Nitrofurantoin, as it’s safe in pregnancy.

Derbee · 17/11/2021 15:25

And just to clarify, you won’t need an actual appointment, you just need to get through on the phone

mummyh2016 · 17/11/2021 16:36

Just call your surgery and ask them if you can drop a urine sample in as you're pregnant as you believe you have a UTI. You don't need an appointment you just need it dipping (and sent to the lab if it shows anything) and a prescription sending to the chemist. I would also drop another sample in the surgery after you have finished the course to check it has gone.
How far are you? Once you're 16 weeks you can contact maternity triage if you can't get in at the docs.
