Hi. I have my GD test tomorrow. (Fingers crossed I can keep eating cakes during bake off!)
I know I have to fast from 23.00 tonight but can I drink water?
Also should I take a urine sample? MW has not replied to my message yet.
Thanks

Yes, you can have water

Incywinceyspider · 16/11/2021 22:17

I had mine last week. Yes you can drink water. I didn't need to take a urine sample. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you for while you're waiting. Also take a snack for when the test is over.

Take some magazines or a book too Smile

Willow1981 · 16/11/2021 22:34

Kindle is charging, packed lunch is ready and I will get water bottle ready tomorrow.
Thanks everyone

What does the drink taste like?

BlusteringBoobies · 17/11/2021 03:28

If you've ever had lactuloss it's quite similar. Very thick and sugary. Unpleasant but not vile. Nice swig of water afterwards!

You aren't allowed to drink water while waiting - I was only allowed three sips to help get the drink down. It dilutes the sugar, so the results won't be accurate.

Good luck! It's just a tedious long test

BlusteringBoobies · 17/11/2021 08:03

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 Must be different at different hospitals! I went two weeks ago and was told I could drink water while waiting and we were offered a small bottle if we didn't have one ourselves!

Nuglife123 · 17/11/2021 08:11

Hi, hope the test goes well today! I've got mine tomorrow and I'm still being sick, especially when I I haven't eaten..if I'm sick before the test would it be invalid? Not sure if it would mess sugars up? Thanks

catinthehat12 · 17/11/2021 08:20

I was also allowed water during the 2 hour wait! Must be different rules. Mine also wasn’t particularly thick, think flat lucozade. It was an awful toxic yellow colour, but the taste wasn’t as bad as I thought.

I can’t imagine being sick should impact it, you won’t have anything to be sick. If you were sick after having the glucose drink, that would impact the test obviously. It might be worth discussing it with them being on the day.

PremieMummy · 17/11/2021 08:23

I had mine Monday gone and was told I could drink as much water as I wanted as it doesn't effect the results...?
Hate it when different hospitals use different info!! 😒

Willow1981 · 17/11/2021 10:11

Currently sitting in my car having had the first blood test and the drink. Mine was OK. Rather like strongish orange squash. Just got to wait 2 hours.
Downloaded some episodes of Greys anatomy to keep me occupied!

I had my test yesterday - I was allowed to drink water while waiting - although I didn't have much as I didn't want to keep going to the loo!

Interesting that they let you go to the car, I was told not to leave the area - if I did I would need to repeat the test.

I'm currently anxiously waiting for my results - apparently I will get a phone call if it's positive, otherwise I'll get a letter. I wish they called either way!

The worst bit was them taking the blood sample - the HCA managed to hit a nerve and my arm is really sore today!

Blxo94 · 17/11/2021 12:00

I had mines yesterday... Got the call today and have been diagnosed with GD! gutted!

Let me know how you all that are waiting get on!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 17/11/2021 13:13

That's so annoying, I was actually on the verge of puking it back up, and she wouldn't let me have any water beyond three little sips to keep it down. Sounds like some of you got nicer drinks also! Mine was a really thick sticky gunky liquid.

We weren't allowed to leave the monitoring area or walk about either, as apparently that affects the levels 😂

@Blxo94 ahh noooo! I was positive also, and have been on the GD diet for a few weeks now. It was awful at first but there is a lot we can still eat. Nuts on everything to bring levels down, peanut butter is amazing, lots of dairy like yoghurt and cheese. Baked Camemberts my new treat when everyone else is snacking. Also one tip someone told me that really works is to dance or briskly walk for ten mins after every meal - really brings the levels down, esp if you ate something a bit naughty

Blxo94 · 17/11/2021 13:29

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 I'm dreading it. Just got the call today so waiting on letters coking through for appointment to see the nurse and the diabetic clinic. Hoping I can monitor it through diet! I have such a sweet tooth so I'm going to struggle 😂 and thanks I will keep dancing and walking in mind! X

Blxo94 · 17/11/2021 13:32

Strange that you weren't all allowed to leave... I was told to leave and come back 2 hours later. I walked home and back! I didn't feel well at all after my test I felt very sick and dizzy and felt like I was going to faint. I went chalk white 😂! Shouldn't be surprised I am positive after that reaction! Wonder if my levels would have been higher if I had not walked home and back for my second blood work x

Willow1981 · 17/11/2021 15:02

I was sent to the main hospital and the Path lab so no waiting area.(I'm a difficult bleeder, apparently. No surprise to my family!)
They were happy for me to sit in the car but not go off shopping etc.
