Only head shot given at 20 week scan….does this mean they have given away gender?!

Hi
We had our 20 weeks scan and told sonographer that we didn’t want to know sex of baby. We like a surprise! We were only given head and upper body pictures, they were very very clear…..and now I’m gutted that this has inadvertently given away the sex of the baby. Surely they would only not give you the full body pic if it was a boy? I’m assuming there must have been something to defo see and that’s why they didn’t give me full length pic.
Anyone else experienced anything similar?
Am I over thinking?
We aren’t fussed on gender, im just more gutted that the surprise element may have been taken away ☹️

Girls are pretty clear on an ultrasound if you know what you are looking for. So yes, overthinking 😆

bookgirl1982 · 13/11/2021 16:30

You're reading too much into it, a full body shot can give it away whether boy or girl.

Jabvribt · 13/11/2021 16:30

It’s normal not to give a full body picture at 20 weeks as the baby is too big to get them all in one shot. They have to take images of different parts. The only scan I had full images at were 12 weeks

Jabvribt · 13/11/2021 16:31

If it was that obvious you’d have noticed during the scan

BelieveInRainbows · 13/11/2021 16:32

Definitely overthinking. Boys will have obvious boy bits, girls will have 3 lines making obvious girl bits. So you'd be able to tell either way if it was a boy or a girl. It doesn't mean it's a boy and I think it's standard not to get a full body shot if you don't want to know the sex, especially if your baby is happily showing off their bits Grin Enjoy your surprise!

Minorissue · 13/11/2021 16:33

You’re reading far too much into this. I found out gender at my scan and also only have head shots. Deep breaths!

daisychainsandrainbows · 13/11/2021 16:33

They haven't given away anything, your baby might have done though mind you Grin

I'd think no more about it, maybe there were obvious boy (or girl!) bits or maybe baby is just too big now to fit all in one picture. Forget about it and look forward to your surprise :)

Honestly OP you are over thinking this. In the nicest way, the 20 week scan is to check for anomalies, the aim is not to keep your baby's gender a surprise for you. A girl's genitalia can be very clear if the position is right, so you really haven't been inadvertently told you are having a boy.

Gigisoontobethree · 13/11/2021 16:35

Ah right. I hope so, I just love the idea of a surprise. Was so disappointed when I thought it has been taken away. I always thought it was hard to tell with girls so convinced myself he must have been showing himself in all his glory 🤣
My husband did say he thought she took the photos right at the beginning of scan as she remarked how clear and great they were. So hadn’t even gone down to bottom end yet. But I didn’t know if he was just trying to appease the now hormonal, neurotic pregnant me! 😂
Thanks for replying

20 week scans aren’t full body anyway usually it is just upper body so I wouldn’t worry!

This. It's an anomaly scan, to check your baby is healthy.

I was only given what is basically a head shot at my anomaly scan for DS2 and I was told what he was.

It's probably just the best picture they could get from angle of your baby etc.

jolota · 13/11/2021 21:57

We found out the sex at our scan but only received pictures of babies upper body rather than full body, so don't think it's necessarily an indication that the sonographer was hiding their gender by not giving you fully body photos

HW1989 · 14/11/2021 07:27

I got a full body picture at the 20 week scan last week and didn’t find out the gender - from the angle it’s not possible to see if anything is there either way. So I certainly wouldn’t say it indicates that it’s a boy, it’s just as baby is much bigger at this point they just picture what they can depending on the positioning of baby. The sonographer had to go right in at the side to get a full body image but he said we were lucky to get that.

over2021 · 14/11/2021 07:29

Girls are more obvious than boys if you know what you're looking at so I think you're reading way too much into this 😀

Enjoy your lovely surprise in a few months.

olivehater · 14/11/2021 08:34

I’m a sonographer. I sometimes give a head shot because I can’t get a clear profile and the body in the image as the same time because of the position of the baby. I figure most people would prefer a clear picture of the face than an overall one of the head and body which is less clear. It has nothing to do with the sex. It is very easy to do a body shot without the sex showing, boy or girl.

Is this actually true?! I would've thought the opposite!

olivehater · 01/09/2023 20:57

Girls are more obvious than boys on the 12 week scan. Boys more obvious on the 20 week scan.

AmygdaIa · 01/09/2023 20:59

I thought you meant he had a moustache or something 😂

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 01/09/2023 21:03

Erm. It's that the full baby can't fit in the picture at 20
Weeks

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/09/2023 21:07

I knew I was having a boy because the sonographer asked about 1/3 of the way through the scan if we wanted to / did we already know the sex, we said no, and she immediately grabbed the screen and jerked it away from us. I was the same as you - must have been a boy as a girl we wouldn't have been able to tell ourselves so nothing to hide.

DD is 6 now Grin

Confetto · 01/09/2023 21:11

One of the reasons I found out was because I couldn't stand the idea of finding our accidentally or second-guessing everything that medics said. I agree with pps that a girl could be equally obvious on a scan pic.
