Diet during pregnancy

I've been in a calorie deficit for a while (think 1000 - 1200 calories a day). I've recently found out I'm pregnant and I know I'm going to have to increase this amount. My only problem is that my BMI is currently 28 so I don't want to put on too much weight so I slip into the over 30 BMI mark. I know if I start eating at maintenance straight away, I'm likely to put on quite a bit of weight as my body is now used to eating less calories. I don't really know what to do and my first midwife appointment isn't for another 3 - 5 weeks

The only time I was weighed in pregnancy was at my 12 week scan, this was last winter though so my booking appointment was as over the phone.

That was the weight they used to calculate my BMI.

This might sound really naive but what would happen if you were to stop calorie counting and eat as much (healthy) food as your body tells you it needs?

Tbh for a lot of women diet in the first trimester is just whatever they can stomach and not feel sick. I know I ate a lot crackers, melted cheese and chicken nuggets.

I'm currently in the first trimester and just eating whatever doesnt make me gag. so cheerios, orange juice, vegetables fingers (oven cooked), pizza, pasta and ketchup. that's it!

Hi @winkles23 firstly congratulations! How far along are you? I was in a similar situation as you with a similar BMI when I fell pregnant .. for the first bit of the first trimester I upped my calories a bit but not massively but once morning sickness hit, it went out of the window and I ate whatever I could stomach. In second tri I’ve been eating at maintenance and have put on just under 3kg which is fine for where I’m at in my pregnancy.

If you are worried perhaps it’s worth speaking to your doctor for advice? Your calorie intake sounds very low for your BMI, which calorie deficit counter are you using?
