Drank before I knew

Hi everyone,

I know this must be hugely common and I've read through old threads that prove it is but I still can't help but worry. I have just found out I'm pregnant after a missed period. I didn't think I would be as I had avoided predicted ovulation days which are apparently wrong then lol.

I drank a lot, like 5 glasses of wine and champagne at a friends get together what would have been about 2-3 weeks after conception. I haven't drunk in so long and I'm so annoyed about the timing. I always wanted to plan my pregnancy and be alcohol free and taking the right vitamins before conception and now I'm really worried. Can anyone give me their experiences please? I definitely won't be drinking again but could I have already caused any damage?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

I got married and didn’t realise I was pregnant. I drank, smoked, slammed tequilas. I think in the very early days they are particularly well protected so try not to worry. Congratulations on your pregnancy, now you know you can try and be a bit more careful but don’t beat yourself up about it. (The rules keep changing and all my French friends had a class of wine or two in their pregnancies)

PineappleWilson · 09/11/2021 10:19

You'll be fine. Baby wouldn't have a heart beat at that stage. Loads of pregnant women do this. I found out just before Christmas with my first, so after the family Christmas meal with Baileys. You definitely haven't caused any damage to your baby.

ParkheadParadise · 09/11/2021 10:20

I didn't find out I was pregnant with Dd2 until I was 5 months.
I drank my usual amount of alcohol. Had been to several weddings, holidays. I was more shocked about being pregnant than what I had consumed in alcohol 😄
Dd was born healthy.
Congratulations

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 09/11/2021 10:27

I had a very drunk New Year's Eve before I found out. Don't stress!

Bells3032 · 09/11/2021 10:43

there's no placenta at that stage so can't pass it onto the baby. what it could do is cause a miscarriage but that would have been pretty much right away.

I didn't know i was pregnant til 7 weeks and was knocking back cocktails a couple of days before. now 28 weeks

sborber · 09/11/2021 10:48

Honestly don't beat yourself up over it. My first I followed all the "rules" about stopping drinking, smoking, exercising, eating well, taking conception vitamins. But my (surprise) second got whatever crap I consumed and smoked during my FIL's 60th birthday party. I was already 6 or 7 weeks and hadn't a clue. I didn't discover my pregnancy until 10 weeks, in fact. He's 6 weeks old now and just fine. Just make sure you're on your vitamins now etc. etc.

GinnyBee · 09/11/2021 10:52

So many women have found out they're pregnant after a party or a holiday or whatever. The placenta won't be formed yet so you're not sharing blood with the baby, there's no way it could reach baby yet! Honestly don't worry about it :)

ohfook · 09/11/2021 10:54

You'll be fine.

PeskyRooks · 09/11/2021 10:59

I got absolutely hammered at my work Christmas party and I mean wine, brandies, cherry licquor after the meal, I was staggering drunk. I found out I was pregnant in February turns out I had conceived late November about 3 weeks before the party!
Pregnancy and birth all fine, dd is 15 now and strong as an ox!
So please do not worry!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2021 11:03

at that early stage you don't share blood with baby so it will be fine.

friend of mine got totally shitfaced at her cousin's hen night: black out, puke your guts out, had to be carried to taxi drunk. She was drowning her sorrows because they'd been TTC for over a year but nothing.
She was already pg at the hen night but unaware.
Imagine her shock and anxiety when she had a PFB!😱🤣
She had a totally healthy baby boy.

No matter what everyone says you will carry on worrying so my suggestion is not to stop but to try & distract yourself from the anxious thoughts.

Best of luck!

EdgeOfTheSky · 09/11/2021 11:05

This was my worry.

My GP said ‘for heaven’s sake, how many pregnancies are a result of drinking a bit too much in the first place! Stop worrying’

Your embryo is still fully dependent on its sac at this stage. The placenta gradually forms and full switch over is at about 12 weeks (this is why it's a risky time). So your drinking would have remained in your blood system only and not affected the embryo.

Oh thank you so much ladies!! I feel huge relief now. I'm still awaiting my first midwife appointment so will discuss with her as well but you have made me feel a lot better. Thank you!! Xx

I'm 24 weeks now and baby is doing well. I drank way more than you've described at a friends birthday & then my own a week later when I was a similar gestation, impossible to know when you're that early & if it was actually that serious when baby was so tiny they would tell you to not drink at all while ttc which isn't the case, so I really wouldn't worry. I'm sure I read some research actually indicates that alcohol is most damaging later in pregnancy.

I found out at 24 weeks pregnant… I was also 18. Obviously wouldn’t recommend it to anyone and it’s really not ideal but my son was/is perfect.

I drank and smoked and got rat arsed at a work event before finding out I was pregnant.

She’s just graduated.

I found out I was pregnant in January. Before Christmas I went out 10 nights in a row. Drinking every single night. My child was fine.

Beachbreak2411 · 09/11/2021 23:35

Op.. I had my daughter and I didn’t know I was pregnant (no missed periods.. no bump.. no kicking feelings).. and I drank ALOT.. I was managing a busy restaurant with a cocktail bar attached. I think I drank 5 nights a week. She’s now 10 and she’s perfect. Above average in all subjects; achieves highest scores in her dance exams (she takes 5 classes a week) and is just taking grade 2 in an instrument. Obvs drinking isn’t something to do in pregnancy.. but it’s not a massive red flag for the rest of their life x

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 09/11/2021 23:35

I got horribly drunk and embarrassed myself the weekend before I found out I was pregnant. I had to be put into a taxi by my boss and not only did I beat myself up for the drinking but also for the state I was in. When I first started trying to get pregnant I gave up alcohol, took vitamins etc but it took years to get pregnant so I felt much like you. She is 8 years older now and awesome!
