Appalling diet in first trimester

Morning all,

I am currently in a flap that I've got to 12 weeks pregnant and hardly eaten a vegetable. My diet has been horrendous, mcdonalds, take aways, beige food. Just crap.

I haven't had much morning sickness but I have just craved fatty foods. The practicality of eating crap has just overriden everything else as I've been exhausted. Basically I'm now worried I've effected my child.

I am feeling far better now so am going to be exercising and eating better from today.

Has anyone felt and done the same and was everything okay?

Thank you I advance. X

Some people take drugs and drink throughout the first trimester and everything is fine. I wouldn't worry. Have you been taking pregnancy vitamins? I also know lots of people who threw up almost everything in the first trimester, so I reckon it's fine!

lawandgin · 08/11/2021 09:11

It's completely normal. I existed on salt and vinegar crisps, ready meals and takeaways - or whatever beige rubbish my husband could cook. Now I'm 15 weeks, everything is fine and I can finally stomach fruit and veg again!

Teaandcrumpets95 · 08/11/2021 09:49

Don't panic it's fine and it will get better!
I'm 16 weeks and have finally been enjoying fruit and veg the past couple weeks x
First trimester I honestly ate so much crap, I lived off takeaway pizza, bread, yoghurt and sugar, a lot of sugar 😅

mummabubs · 08/11/2021 09:53

I survived the first trimester with my son on a diet of plain spaghetti and fizzy sweets, four years later my daughter was formed mostly on diet Coke and beige in all its forms. I think if it's something you can keep down and you stay hydrated then those are the two main goals 😂

Seeline · 08/11/2021 09:56

I spent the first 14 weeks surviving on dry rice crispies (and that was a good day!!). DS is a strapping 20 yo now - hasn't seemed to have done him any harm 🙂

bubblepond · 08/11/2021 09:58

Don't worry! I'm currently 19 weeks and just in the last 2-3 weeks been able to keep vegetables down. My midwife said not to worry too much about what I was eating in the first trimester, she said it was more important just to eat whatever I could keep down.
Hope you are feeling better soon!

Magilix · 08/11/2021 10:01

It's very normal and your baby will be fine. I normally eat a healthy diet and love vegetables. In my first trimester I lived on Ginster's steak slices, pot noodles and salt and vinegar crisps. I couldn't face eating anything else and the sight of a lettuce leaf made me want to vomit!

CasaBonita · 08/11/2021 10:02

Don't worry. I also lived on chicken burgers from McDonald's. I couldn't face anything else. I remember talking to my doctor about it, she said it was fine and it was protein after all Grin

The major downside to this is the weight gain - I put on 4 stone

Just take a good pregnancy vitamin and all will be well.

drpaddington · 08/11/2021 10:07

I had severe HG so could go days without eating a thing, then what I did eat came back up. When I did manage to eat it certainly wasn't healthy, just whatever I could manage at time time. Lots of mini cheddars!

Try not to worry!

Badabingbadabum · 08/11/2021 10:18

Tea, Cadbury's flakes, Domino's stuffed crust pizza with dd1. With dd2 I added Greggs and Starbucked chilled espresso in cans to this. Vegetables made me sick! Two perfectly heathly children came out at the end.

Beware of constipation with such a veg light diet though!

checkedroses · 08/11/2021 10:21

The only thing I ate in the first trimester was bread and butter, hula hoops and rice crispies. I was only sick once but I still lost 5kg weight. Baby was fine and is now a grumpy teenager!

SummerHouse · 08/11/2021 10:22

Your baby will be totally fine. They take what they need from you, not the food you eat. That said, you need to look after you. You are absolutely right to get back to eating better, but you will have done no harm.

You will feel better and have more energy if you are kind to yourself in what you eat.

starrynight21 · 08/11/2021 10:25

I lived on salt and vinegar crisps and Coke for my DD . With DS I didn't know I was pregnant, and I smoked and drank alcohol with abandon.

DS is now 6'3" of muscle, runs his own business, super healthy . DD is also very healthy and just got her masters in education. Neither of them has ever been ill in their lives. Don't worry about the vegetables, you'll be fine and so will your baby.

orinocosfavoritecake · 08/11/2021 11:42

I had my super healthy DS1 (fantastic runner, never caught a cold in nursery, just a comically healthy child) after 9 months of a diet that was about 70% tunnocks tea cake. I really wouldn’t worry.

orinocosfavoritecake · 08/11/2021 11:43

And what SummerHouse said.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 08/11/2021 12:14

I’m 15 weeks with my third baby. In every pregnancy I’ve had terrible morning sickness and barely been able to eat. When I have been able to manage something it is always unhealthy junk food. I haven’t looked at a vegetable in months. All my babies have been very strong and healthy. They take what they need from you, don’t worry.

Maighread · 08/11/2021 12:20

I lived off beige the first trimester, couldn't even thing of a vegtable. As long as you're taking vitamins and looking after yourself where you can everything will be OK X

Yaty · 08/11/2021 12:22

I could only eat crisps, crackers and chicken kebabs for first 12 weeks, everything was fine I wouldn't stress about it!

HeyFloof · 08/11/2021 13:18

I wouldn't worry, they literally suck the life out of you in order to get nutrition. And then continue to suck the energy out of you once they're born, they take it directly from your soul I think.

Wonderful, delightful, gorgeous little buggers they are Grin

Greenmarmalade · 08/11/2021 13:21

The first trimester diet is so beige! Mine were all very beige, peppered with colourful sweets. I vomited so much of it in my first pregnancy that it hardly mattered!

Jane0106 · 08/11/2021 13:22

Nearly 15 weeks and can hardly stand any veg or fruit still!!! I started having the odd day where I could force myself to eat something healthy last few weeks!! I was starting to feel better but nope back with the sickness today so my diets back to salt and vinegar crisps and super noodles 😂

Chelyanne · 08/11/2021 13:30

Don't worry about it. Make sure you are taking multivitamins and Omega 3 to prevent deficiencies.

My diet was terrible for the 1st 16 weeks with our last, once the nausea passed I got back to healthier eating and felt much better for it. Baby was born at 38+6 and is a perfect little treasure.

InvisibleDragon · 08/11/2021 13:55

What is it about salt and vinegar crisps??

I'm 8 weeks now and my diet has been pretty beige too - toast, oatcakes, chips, crisps etc. All my usual favourite healthy foods suddenly seem disgusting. I particularly resent how eating reduces my nausea - so I end up eating mouthfuls of cardboard oatcakes at 4am when I'm not even hungry just to feel better.

It's annoying, but hopefully it will pass. And I don't think it does any harm - it seems to be fairly common!

MiniMooCow · 08/11/2021 14:36

Wow thank you everyone taking the time to reply. So it seems this is quite normal!

😃🥰 thanks for the reassurance. X
