Mildly dilated renal pelvis

Just got back from my 36weeks scan. All the measurements were good and growth in range. The only thing that was flagged up was that the right renal pelvis is mildly dilated to 8mm … does anyone have any experience with this and can share it with me? I had scans at 20,28 and 32weeks and this never came out, I am obviously a bit worried.. thank you!

My first child had this, mild in one kidney and moderate in the other. It usually goes away before birth or shortly after. They will give baby a low dose antibiotic called Trimethoprim and do and ultrasound at a few weeks old to see if it has gone. If not, they will do some other checks. My son's didn't go until he was 3 but he didn't have any symptoms associated with it.

Thank you @User79853257976 for sharing…and glad your baby didn’t have symptoms and he’s fine! it is an extra worry and I don’t understand why it did showed up jus now so late… but hopefully it is it will go after birth and won’t create too many issues!

That happened to me as well, found late in 3rd tri and I was really worried but in all likelihood everything will be fine. The main thing is that baby will be protected from UTI by the antibiotics and then it should iron tself out.

8mm is a normal measurement for your gestation, it should be below 10mm third trimester and below 7mm at 20 weeks!🙂

Hi @JumperooSue than you for your message!! I noticed that when I googled it, but the sonographer at FM said it was borderline and made an alert for when the baby is born to be checked and be put on antibiotics? It might be because the left kidney was smaller? No idea…

Yes sometimes they can be a bit more prominent by eye! Always worth being a little cautious but I wouldn’t worry too much, if the level of amniotic fluid around the baby was fine and this is the first time it’s been noted and still within normal limits it’s likely to just be an incidental finding🙂

Thank you! Yes fluid was all good and also all the other measurements… they didn’t tell me but I saw them looking at baby features, and read that can be a sign of chromosome abnormalities, but I had a NIPT done anyway so hopefully all is good.. thanks for the reassurance :)
