How much weight did you lose immediately after giving birth?

I'm interested if the average weight gain is 30lb, baby is only 7-8lb of that.. how much do you also lose with the baby after birth within first weeks or so?

I never even bothered weighing myself. Don't stress about weight loss, you've grown a baby.

pancakesonsunday · 05/11/2021 09:46

I gained 20 points. DC was 7 pounds and a week after the birth I had lost 11 pounds. A month later it was all gone.

usernotfound0000 · 05/11/2021 09:49

I weighed myself the day I went into hospital, put on 4 stone, DD was 7lb, I weighed myself when I came home and had lost 6lbs! I don't know how I managed to lose less than the baby weighed Grin. I did lose about 1 stone over the following 2 weeks though as I was retaining a lot of water. Don't worry about it though, 9 months to put the weight on, expect to take 9 months to lose it.

WalkingOnSonshine · 05/11/2021 09:49

I gained 19kg (had lots of retained fluid due to the start of pre-eclampsia) and had lost 8kg a couple of days after giving birth and another 3kg two weeks later.

Took a good while longer to lose another 3kg and still got the last 4-5 to go!

firstimemamma · 05/11/2021 09:50

I was back to the 9 stone I was at before getting pregnant at 6 months postpartum and that was with constant eating / no effort. Immediately after the birth? It doesn't matter. Most women still look pregnant for the first month or so anyway so why agonise over the amount of weight imo.

Danikm151 · 05/11/2021 09:51

20lb lighter a week after giving birth. Baby was only 6lb

Goneblank38 · 05/11/2021 09:52

I gained a considerable amount of weight with both pregnancies. First time round, I lost everything and more within five months. Seven months in second time around and I've lost nothing. I don't think there's a general rule to be honest.

modge · 05/11/2021 09:53

I had gained 2 stone by the time I went into labour. Baby was 8lb and when I went home the next day, I'd lost 1 stone. I lost another half over probably the next month and the other half over maybe six months or so, it was quite gradual.

Mymapuddlington · 05/11/2021 09:54

I gained 28lb and with two weeks had lost it all and more. Was breast feeding though and was very stressed.
This time I’ve lost 14lb and in third trimester 🤔

BigPyjamas · 05/11/2021 09:55

I came out of hospital 6kg lighter. I'd put on about 8kg in total.

I was lighter the day after I gave birth than I am now (blames lockdown biscuit eating)

Babdoc · 05/11/2021 09:55

I was 8 stone 5lbs before I was pregnant. Delivered an 8lb baby and was back to 8 stone 5lbs five days later.
There is no need to “eat for two” during pregnancy - the extra calorie requirement amounts to about two extra slices of bread a day for the final trimester.
The weight gain should be baby, placenta, fluid and uterine growth, not pounds of excess fat. It’s much easier to not overeat and put on fat in the first place, than try to lose it later when you are sleep deprived and craving carbs!

MrsCremuel · 05/11/2021 09:56

I gained 2.5 stone and within 4 weeks had lost 1.5stone. 10lbs came off over the next 6 months and I was back to pre pregnancy weight by one year pp - thanks to breastfeeding as I was still gobbling cake daily.

MrsCremuel · 05/11/2021 09:57

Oh and DS was 7lbs10

BigPyjamas · 05/11/2021 09:58

@Babdoc

5 days later, well, someone overindulged in their two extra slices of bread. Such a shame it didn't come off quicker

Don't forget the placenta and all the amniotic fluid. A good amount of it will also be blood volume (inside your body!), water retention and fat deposits (for milk production).

Honestly don't worry about it. I know I put on 15kg over pregnancy, but I didn't weigh myself again until baby was a few months old.

BurningBenches · 05/11/2021 10:01

I'm overweight and put a stone on with babies 2,3 and 4 and 1.5st with baby 5.

All babies were around 9lb. So with 2, 3 and 4 i was a few pounds lighter than my start weight within a couple of days (dd3 was 9lb10 and I was 7lb lighter)
Dc5 I was about the same as where I started.

girlmom21 · 05/11/2021 10:02

I lost a lot of weight (don't know figures but I looked good!) quickly after DD1 as I was breastfeeding.

Lost a stone in the first two weeks after DD2 and wasn't breastfeeding.

TheCheeseBadge · 05/11/2021 10:10

I was interested so weighed myself the day I went into labour and when I came out of hospital 5 days later. I lost 22lbs!

Some of the comments on here are nonsense - you don't just gain the weight of the baby, there's the placenta, amniotic fluid, water retention, additional blood etc to think of, of course it's fine to gain weight.

Namenic · 05/11/2021 10:10

I didn’t lose as much weight as I thought just after the birth in previous times. Remember - there is the aminiotic fluid, placenta and also I think blood volume is increased in pregnant women (so that might account for some of it I guess). I think this pregnancy (close to term now) I’ve put on about 9kg - and I’m guessing about 2-3kg would be baby. Maybe increase in breast tissue etc might be like 0.5kg.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/11/2021 10:23

I actually gain around ~30kg with each pregnancy, or twice the “recommended” textbook amount. But when not pregnant, my BMI was usually 18-20, so not underweight, but on low end. My DH is also tall and was a large baby.

I usually lose around 12kg from childbirth, although I weighed myself a few days afterwards, so after several nights of the sweats and my blood volume reducing. My babies have all been large for someone as small as me. 8-10.5lbs.

The rest I lose by breastfeeding and mild exercise over 6months. Then back to prepregnancy weight.

LakeShoreD · 05/11/2021 10:29

I gained 35lbs. By one week post partum I’d lost 20. 10 more came off my the time baby was a month old. I didn’t do any sort of fitness or diet regime so found the last 5 were more stubborn and I wasn’t back at my pre pregnancy weight until 6 months afterwards.

BalloonSlayer · 05/11/2021 10:33

Came home from hospital having had a 9.5 lb baby, plus placenta, plus all that water, having had no food for 24 hours and shite scanty NHS food for the next two days . . . hadn't even lost a stone. I was outraged!

Mind you as soon as BF got going I lost a pound a day and by the time baby was 2 weeks old I was half a stone lighter than when I got pregnant and worrying I was going to disappear.

muldersspeedos · 05/11/2021 11:05

All of it. Put on a stone with each pregnancy. All babies between 5.5 and 6.5 lbs so blood and fluid loss and placenta in total equalled my weight gain. I list more in the first few weeks afterwards then slowly got back to normal. I lose my appetite in pregnancy and go off chocolate.

cultkid · 05/11/2021 11:13

I lost 4 kg when I had my son the day I got home from hospital (day after section) and another few kg in the next weeks

It took two years to lose about 5 kg I didn't do well to lose the weight after my second born it was a hassle

Hoping not to carry as much weight this time

MollysDolly · 05/11/2021 12:33

It depends what your weight gain was. Mine was 3st. But I was unbelievably swollen with water retention. I didn't weigh myself until a good ten days after birth, but by then, my swollen limbs had gone, and I was 2.5 stone lighter than the day before I had them. I think the water was 2st of that, and that goes really quickly.
