Pregnancy & Nipple piercings - advice?

Very early stages of pregnancy- coming up 6 weeks, this will be my first baby.
Got my nipples pierced back in May and I know the healing process is about a year.

Other than my nipples getting darker, not much has changed so far but I'm aware they'll start getting bigger.
My bars have a little bit of leeway for swelling but is it worth me going back to my piercer soon to ask for bigger bars incase of discomfort?

Also - breastfeeding mamas with nipple piercings... I'm not even sure what my question is here but do you take them out? Can I leave them in if I'm expressing?
I have so many questions basically on 'how does it work' 😂

Any advice or experiences is greatly appreciated! 😁

Ask yourself whats more important. .your baby feeding properly or you having boob piercings.... why would you want her/him sucking on the bars? At some point if you can imagine babies have teeth too Wink ...
You can always re-pierce them later...

I'm coming up to 10 weeks and have had my nipples pierced 10 years. They still have funny spells now and then even though they're fully healed. I'll be taking mine out as you have to take them out every time you breastfeed (choking hazard) and they can be really sore for days after changing the bars even without factoring in painful boobs. I imagine even if you're expressing it would be super painful to keep the bars in because of the suction... Honestly I don't think it will be worth it if you plan to breast feed!

My nipples didn’t get bigger. I think you’ll be fine. I kept my belly piercing in until the end and that certainly got bigger!

@Somerandomgirl No need to be arsey, must be nice up there on your horse.
Didn't once say I would be breast feeding with them in 🙄🥱

@rathernotshare Didnt realise they would hurt taking them in & out 😬 I've had so many piercings and once they're healed, they've been absolutely fine - but my sister said hers never fully healed either 🙃
DH wants me to breast feed from the get go but I'm not overly keen on the idea so would much rather express & bottle feed.. but will see how I get on when it comes to it. Thank you for your reply 😊

@Bonnealle Thanks for your reply - that's good to know, also the belly piercing too! Always forget I've got that done 🙈😂

I had mine pieced for 3 years and took them out when I fell pregnant. I'm not breastfeeding but my nipples got really sensitive and the piercing was not helping the pain! I felt it'd be more convenient and less hassle without them too.

My nipples look very weird and naked without their bars in now so I'm getting them redone once I've had the next baby Grin

Maybe just see how you go! Especially if you're not breastfeeding.

I'd had my nipple piercings in for 20 years when I got pregnant back in February. I ended up taking them out at 9 weeks as my breasts were so sore & swollen. If I caught them it was excruciating. I could've probably kept them in if it bought a slightly larger bar but I just couldn't be bothered. I knew I'd end up taking them out eventually as I plan on breastfeeding & didn't want to have to keep taking them out constantly.

@bethabean @JackJack84 Thank you for sharing your experiences :)

So far my breasts have just been incredibly sore & heavy feeling and are definitely much bigger but I'm currently seeing no changes to my nipples.
I think I'm gonna try and keep them in as long as possible & once baby is here take them out assuming I can even breastfeed - I'm aware it doesn't happen for everyone.
Im definitely leaning more towards expressing though - in which case, I'll see how it is with them in 🤷🏻‍♀️
If I have to formula feed then I guess I won't have an issue anyways 😂

I took mine out at the hospital labouring DD. Never popped them back in sadly.

sunflower2020 · 10/11/2021 16:29

I took my nipple piercings out at 6 months pregnant and to be honest it felt like a relief even though I didn't have much swelling of my boobs. I had them for about 2 years before that. Just got them done again last Friday (now baby is 20 months) and the healing is amazing, it feels like I never took them out :)

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/11/2021 19:28

I had mine done for years, I took them out just before I left to go to tgd hospital in labour with DS, now 3. They never went back in.

I had plans of putting them back in, but I found BF so painful I just couldn't face it!

Memyselfandfood · 10/11/2021 19:32

Can you get longer bars? They do maternity naval bars ( they’re ptfe so not metal) unsure if they do nipple version?

BeautifulBirds · 10/11/2021 19:36

My previously pierced nipple was useless for feeding. We fed from one side for the duration. I imagine it's the scar tissue that prevents milk coming out properly.
