GP wants to ring before prescribing iron I need?

At my booking in appointment had bloods taken and received a message off midwife the next day to say my iron store level is low so she has sent a request to the GP and to try and ring Tuesday (19th of October) to see if prescription is ready, so I ring they say doctor is just doing it and they will let me know when it's ready, I don't hear anything so I ring back on Wednesday and the receptionist says the doctor wants to talk to me about it, and isn't going to prescribe it without doing it. So I say okay I finish work at 2pm I'm free after that.. she's say oh the doctor doesn't have a free phone call slot until the 2nd of November (?! 2 whole weeks of withholding the iron), so I've got my phone call tomorrow and I'm not convinced they're actually going to call, they've been unreliable with phone calls previously but my midwife has never had a GP not follow through with a request for iron before.. has anyone had anything similar? The thing is though I really need this medicine, I've been taking my vitamins which have iron in but it's just not enough, I'm dizzy when I bend down, I've no energy and the headaches are just awful.. I've had to take the day off work today 😩 what could he possibly need to discuss?!

If you don't get the call, or a satisfactory answer from Dr. Then speak to midwife. I had a bad stomach bug in first trimester and Dr. Didn't call me so I called the mid wife for advice and she helped. The request has come from another medical professional so should be acted on. The mid wife probably thinks it's all sorted.

Maybe dosage, follow up blood tests or side effects?
However, you can buy ferrous fumarate OTC, I’m prescribed one tablet 3 x a day for low iron but I’m not pregnant.

It can cause stomach upsets but it can also cause constipation in some people so probably best to have some fybogel in in case it affects you that way. You don’t want to end up straining & getting hemorrhoids!

It's quite early in your pregnancy to be anemic so Doctor would probably like to check there isn't an underlying cause (bleeding in the gut is the first go to)so they want to ask about abdominal pain, stool colour, blood when you wipe etc.

@Lizlou85 I spoke to her to let her know the doctor wants to speak to me that's when she said she's never had that before but if that's what they want to do then let them do it. But I will deffo speak to her again if I'm not happy, thank you

@HazelandChacha thank you, definitely don't want that haha!

@womaninatightspot ahh yeah, never thought of that.. I was only 9 weeks when I had the blood test! Luckily I don't have any of them other symptoms so should be a straight forward phone call then in that case

Just buy the iron supplements, they're not particularly expensive. If you buy your own you can get iron bisglycinate which is less likely to give you constipation than the fumarate one the doctor will likely prescribe.

My 28 weeks blood came back low in iron..midwife requested GP prescribe iron tablets...GP refused and sent me a text message requesting I buy them myself!
