Can you just ask for a c section?

Just curious really? I have no reason to be offered one or particularly to want one. Just wondering if that was your preference can they refuse to give you one?

Yes you can ask one and due to the NICE guidelines can get one for maternal request. I did 😊

Yes you can. The midwife / consultant may give you a bit of push back (and it may be worth listening to what they have to say) but your wishes should play a pivotal role.

I've been curious about this also. I have group b strep and I thought to myself would it be easier to have an elective c section. But then also read they can said no if reason isn't good enough. I have a consultant appointment in December so I'm going to ask

I’m doing this at the moment. I’m 37 weeks so a little late but baby is measuring big and I’m worried I may not be able to deliver her safely. So I’ve decided to make a maternal request for an elective c section. My midwife has referred me to a consultant who I am seeing next week and hopefully she will agree to my request and book me in. If she doesn’t agree she has to refer me to another consultant as per NICE guidelines

Yes, it would be maternal request if there isn't a medical need.

It seems to be the luck of the draw with your hospital. Some agree without any push back whatsoever, others may try to talk you into a vaginal birth on certain grounds. If they do insist on a vaginal birth but you're adamant you want a c section then you'll be referred to another consultant who should agree.
Have your reasons ready when requesting. It's worth while reading up on the risks and also keep in mind the risks aren't separated into elective c sections and emergency c sections. The later a c section is carried out during labour the higher the risk.

Let your midwife know of your request and they will arrange for a consultant appointment.
