7 week scan showed fetal pole but no heartbeat

Hello all,

I'm hear hoping to have some words of positivity or advice based on personal experience.

I am currently pregnant now 7wks 4days. I had a scan at 7wks 1day. CRL/fetal pole measured at 1.4cm. This isn't normal from what I've read and currently awaiting another scan.

Prior to the this scan, I had one on 19th October which I was around 5wks and 5day and a gestational sac was seen. I then went for a private scan a few days after and they saw the yolk sac.

Clearly there has been progress, but wondering why the fetal pole is so small. I'm hoping that it's due to delayed ovulation, but wanted to know if someone experienced something similar and what was the outcome for them.

May i ask what happened as the same thing has just happened to me? X

@gemmabrittonuk I can't comment on the heartbeat but the size is perfectly normal, I had a scan at 7w+2, and CRL wS 12mm was told this put me at 7+3. Had a scan yesterday at 10+4 measuring 10+6 and all on track. I could see the heartbeat both times though x

Unless op meant 1.4mm rather than 1.4cm

I'm in a similar position at the moment. 2 weeks ago when I was 7+5 I was scanned by my fertility clinic and they said the sac was empty no fetal pole and no heartbeat. I was referred to the hospital to manage the miscarriage that day however the hospital scanned me and found the heartbeat and the fetal pole but it was only measuring 2.3mm so way behind where it should be. I was sent home and told to expect to miscarry in the following days. I didn't miscarry so was scanned the following week, heartbeat was still strong and baby had doubled in size but was still measuring small. So at the moment I'm still in limbo, I'll be scanned next week when I'm 10+5 so hoping baby will catch up.

@Atnaforange this is so interesting! Honestly cant imagine how you feel! I mean at this point if im still growing im 100% not getting it removed if there could be some sort of hope?! I just think if its not viable my body will do it naturally. Your story gives me hope i would love to know how you get on, so what are you measuring now at 10 wks? X

@gemmabrittonuk I haven't been measured since last week and baby was just 5mm at that stage. They wanted to wait 2 weeks to see if baby would grow. It's such a hard situation you can't grieve because you haven't lost anything yet and you can't get excited because the babies heartbeat could stop any day it's just awful (I think I responded to you on another thread under a different name sorry i didn't realise it was the same person)

@Atnaforange haha yes sorry i can see your other post i used a different topic incase. My thoughts and hopes are with you hun! Ill post my update next week!

@Atnaforange yer baby hasnt grown according to scan today so trying to decide whether to take a pill or op now, very sad but atleast i have closure now. How are you doing?

@gemmabrittonuk I'm so sorry to hear that. The waiting is awful though so I know what you mean about closure. I hope you are being kind to yourself 💐

I'm OK my scan is not until Thursday so I don't know what to expect. I'm yoyoing between hope and hopelessness. I will update here whatever the outcome.

apologies I haven't had alerts to review feedback. All turned out well in the end. I am 32wks pregnant so not long to go.

I believe I ovulated late. My pregnancy is high risk due to diabetes, so I'm having regular scans which continue to give me reassurance. :-)
I hope everyone is getting on ok? my advice based on experience is not to over reassurance articles etc and have faith in what will be.

Keep the faith, baby is showing signs that are defeating medical knowledge. Its so hard especially when this is all that you wanted.

Keep me posted on your progress. I'm now 32 wks pregnant and I still worry lol.

Baby is doing fine - currently 32wks. I think my ovulation date was nearer to my period due date hence certain measurements not in line based on my last period. Sending you love and well wishes.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Go with what you feel is right. To give you a lil hope, I had an ectopic pregnancy in Feb 2021 and then fell pregnant 7 months later and I'm now 32 wks. I pray that you have what your heart desires in due course.

@gemmabrittonuk sadly our scan today had the same outcome as you. Baby had not grown from last scan and their little heart had stopped beating. I have taken the medication to start bleeding. Hoping you are doing OK x
