Abdo cyst found @ 20w scan :(

Hey all.

Had our 20w scan and it didn’t go as we had liked :(…. Sonographer found the baby has an abdominal cyst (but couldnt confirm where I.e. kidney, bowel, ovary) she said it was hard to tell. Have been referred to the FMU. This will be our first (had a MC before this one) and so am just deflated and sad that we are now facing the unknown with this pregnancy. Just wanted all to be ok so we can look forward to meeting LO.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar situation and cyst/s were found in their baby in the abdomen area? And if so, what were the outcomes? I would rather be prepared even if the outcomes were negative than to be blindsided by bad news.

Thanks in advance 💐

I don't have experience of this. But I did have a horrible, horrible 20 wk scan that picked something up that turned out to be nothing. I really hope this is nothing / easily treatable. Just hang in there and have faith until you find out more. Flowers

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 29/10/2021 20:13

Hello @SummerHouse thanks so much for the message and am so pleased yours turned out to be nothing! I really am trying to stay positive but we always have the worst luck and so am just not very hopeful.
Thank you 💐

Hi @AlwaysSeekingComfort - I'm so sorry to hear about your worries following the scan. I'm not sure if you've already seen this, but there is a thread on here dating back to April of this year which you might find helpful: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/antenatal_tests_choices/4206180-Small-cyst-found-in-baby-s-abdomen-at-20-week-scan-should-I-be-as-worried-as-I-am
I'm thinking of you, and really hope that the cyst disappears on its own. I hope the wait to see FMU goes quickly too, so that you soon have more information that will hopefully set your mind at rest.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 01/11/2021 10:14

Hey @PaperFleur, thanks so much 💐

Yes I did see that!! I have PM’d the OP but haven’t had a response yet :(. Thanks so much for thinking of me and replying. I really appreciate it! Hopefully hear from FMU today 🤞🏻 X

Hi again OP. Has anyone mentioned ARC to you? They help parents through anti natal screening and the consequences. www.arc-uk.org

When I had my 20 week scan, it was a soft marker for an abnormality. I was 36 and pretty much convinced myself it was downs. It wasn't. It was nothing. I wish I could go back and tell myself not to worry, but I can say it to you. Focus on yourself, keep busy with things that keep your mind from spiralling. I did pregnancy yoga which helped me. I also thought of three things at the end of each day that I was grateful for. You shouldn't have to be strong, but you will be. And most likely this will be distant memory as you look at your perfect baby. Flowers

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 01/11/2021 11:54

Hello @SummerHouse, thank you, no they haven’t mentioned it. I haven’t had anything from anyone since my scan on Friday where all she said was she’d refer me to FMU. Will take a look! Thank you x

I am so pleased all was ok for you in the end 💐 it’s so hard isn’t it, not letting your mind go into overdrive. I hate the waiting in limbo and not knowing. Definitely may try pregnancy yoga! Thanks for the tips lovely. So kind x

Hi all
Just thought I should keep this thread updated should anyone else go through similar.
Had our FMU appointment. They did a thorough scan from head to toe… and although they said all looked good (apart from the abdo cyst) they cannot rule out chromosomal or genetic abnormalities. They suspect the cyst is located in the liver but can’t be 100%. They have put a plan in place to follow up 24w, 28w etc. They haven’t offered amino or anything yet but I will question them about this at my next appointment. They state I may have to also have an MRI depending on what future scans show.

Am so sad as I cannot get excited, your first DC should be an exciting time and I see everyone around me having perfect pregnancies and enjoying the whole experience and am envious of all of these perfect families with perfect pregnancies and find myself staring into an empty room which will be a nursery (hopefully) that hasn’t been filled with a single thing because I am too scared to buy anything and jinx it or even buy anything and it not be needed due to something unforeseen happening. I know in the grand scheme of things my situation may not seem that bad and I know there are poor parents out there in much worse situations than me…. But I just can’t help how I feel :(

OP not sure if this is the same sort of thing but I have a liver cyst. It’s been there forever. I was born way before pregnancy ultrasounds so it wouldn’t have been seen. It was first noticed on an upper abdominal scan I had for gastric issues aged about 20, then again on two subsequent scans I’ve had to check for gallstones, one just last week.

It’s described as a simple liver cyst and when I queried the implication of such with the hepatologist he said I would have had it since before I was born, and it’s just part of who I am. He said many people have them and they don’t cause pain or harm, and don’t turn into something more sinister. They are just simple cysts. He said most people who have them don’t know they have them and they’re usually found when looking for something else in the area.

I wonder if your baby’s cyst is something like this?

JuneySunshine · 11/11/2021 14:22

@AlwaysSeekingComfort Thank you for updating. I've been thinking of you. So glad baby was looking well otherwise and I hope your questions are answered at the next opportunity.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 11/11/2021 20:07

Hi @Mykittensmittens,
Thanks for the message! Wow really? Didn’t even know they were really a thing! Dr Google (yes I know I shouldn’t) has hardly anything on liver cysts (or any abdominal cyst for that matter) says they are very rare! So it’s comforting to here your story… and unsure on your age but assume you’ve lived with it a long time then? Is yours big or?

@JuneySunshine thank you 💐 hope you are well?

@AlwaysSeekingComfort I’m 47. On the scan last week it was very clear and measured 40mm (4cm). I recall it was about that when I was 20 so it hasn’t changed. 40mm in a tiny 20w baby would seem massive - no idea if mine has been the same size consistently but as I say, it’s never given me any issues and the hepatologist was very reassuring that they are nothing to get myself worried about.

lljkk · 11/11/2021 20:20

My 20 wk scan found DS had pyeostatis (it's a kidney thing) so I feel for OP i've been there. By end of pregnancy I can only say I was bored with the extra scans & calmly inclined to think nothing was wrong they sure hadn't found anything actually wrong, just the 'marker' that made me upset like OP describes.

So I can honestly confidently advise "Only worry when they find something specific that they know is an actual problem". Hang in there.

ps: DS is 22yo now, financially self-sufficient, etc.

Isolateykatey · 11/11/2021 20:27

Different location but my sister’s DD had a large cyst on her lung, picked up at 20week scan.

They said they wouldn’t know the extent until DN was born and she had to be born at a particular hospital for facilities. Cyst was monitored and she had an operation to remove it when she was 4. No further issues at all.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 12/11/2021 08:32

@Mykittensmittens our LO’s cyst is just over 1cm. Which to me is massive in such a little baby :( !! However I am so glad yours doesn’t give you any problems and your consultant isn’t worried in the slightest! Thank you!

@lljkk yes I mean our next scan is in a couple of weeks and I find myself getting anxious more and more each day on the lead up to it. It’s just such an un enjoyable experience. Nothing like I had imagined to be! Thank you for the advice and so pleased that your DS is well and thriving! 💐

@Isolateykatey oh wow, a lung cyst must have been scary!!! Such good news nothing came of it but it was just simply removed in the end 💐

Hey all, just updating as haven’t in a while. And for any others that will go through similar in the future. Still none the wiser :(. They are certain it’s in the liver though so will be having an MRI soon to 100% confirm. Still very worried and anxious and just deflated…. Next scan is in a couple of weeks.

Hi @AlwaysSeekingComfort,
Glad to see an update from you but sorry to hear you haven't got more information yet. Is little one doing well otherwise, in terms of growth and movement etc?

Sending thoughts and I have all my fingers crossed for you getting some good news before Christmas x

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 06/12/2021 17:52

Hey @JuneySunshine awww nice to hear from you! How are you doing?

Erm growth seems to be good and movement (she moves around in there like a gymnast!) thanks so much I really appreciate it x

@AlwaysSeekingComfort Ah bless her! That's so good to hear :)

I'm doing well thank you :) Also got a little wiggler here. They put the mid-wife through their paces today while she was trying to measure their heartbeat Blush

GemLooper · 07/12/2021 07:33

Hi @AlwaysSeekingComfort. They found a CPAM (cysts) in my baby's left lung at our 20 week scan. I'm now 27 weeks and under consultant care. Had a MRI (which wasn't a bad experience at all) at about 24 weeks and she has microcsyts - basically lots filling up her entire lung lobe. Also under a cardiologist as it's displacing her heart. We are on 4 weekly scans and I won't be able to have baby at our local hospital. Waiting for appointment to speak with paediatric surgeon about surgery post birth. Not sure if the above helps you but I've certainly been very happy with the level of care/attention I've had.

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 07/12/2021 07:55

Hi @GemLooper so sorry you are going through something similar! It’s such a worry! Have they given any incling on what the outcome will be when she is here? Will she need surgery or watch and wait etc? Bless her! Is this your first? I agree, they have been very thorough with scanning her every 4weeks so far and compassionate! I’m just struggling with the unknowns of what the outcome will be x
