If you were told your baby would be big, were they?

I had a scan and the abdominal circ was measuring off the scale - not even plottable on the little chart. Babys femur however was measuring smaller than the 50th and the head and other measurements were on/around 50th (I haven’t got exact measurements sorry!!) at 36 weeks baby was estimated at 7lbs so I’m now having a section at bang on 39 weeks.

Just wondered if you were told something similar whether you did go on to have a ‘bigger’ baby? Both my others were less than 7lbs so I suppose an estimated 9lbs ish at time is bigger for me?

Yes scan said big baby and he was 10lb 11oz born at 39+5. I can't recall how big they said he was at 32 week scan but measuring >98th centile or something like that.

TheGriffle · 29/10/2021 11:07

At my 20 week scan with dd1 the sonographer said to me “well she’s not going to be a small baby is she!”

She was 11 days overdue and 6lb 15.5oz

I was then under consultant care for dd2 as I grow small babies apparently! Dd2 ended up being 6lb 14oz at 1 week early.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 11:09

yes.
every time.

DH is 6'5" so we kind of thought that small babies were unlikely for us.
DS4 was the only early one because of ELSC. he was 8lb 8oz, had he been born on term or over he would've hit the 9lb mark.

all the others were over due and weighed 9lb 1, 9lb 2, 9lb 6 and twice 9lb 14 ( all different pgs).
DD was the smallest with 8lb 3, she wasn't expected to be big but a "good size"

Elllicam · 29/10/2021 11:09

My baby was estimated at 7lb 8 at 36 weeks. She was born at 39 weeks at 7lb 3

LunaLoveFood · 29/10/2021 11:11

Nope. Had 2 growth scans and both predicted a big baby. He was 5lbs 12 when born. With number 2 they again said likely to be big but was only 6lbs 4.

Kittyswhiskers · 29/10/2021 11:13

Hmm it does seem to really vary doesn’t it? I’m intrigued as to what baby will be born at!!

Yes - 8lb 14oz at exactly 37 weeks 😬 I think he ran out of room

Happymama24 · 29/10/2021 11:16

I think the closer you get to your due date the more unreliable the growth scans become.
I have had 4 big babies on my biggest they never mentioned he was big born 11 days late at 11lbs 4 Oz
My other 3 were
9lbs 14oz
10lbs
10lbs 13oz (he was 1 week early, I was induced due to concerns about his size. They were spot on with his last growth scan before birth)

Try not to worry, all mine were uncomplicated births

Branleuse · 29/10/2021 11:18

with ds2, midwife said he felt like he was going to be a good 8lber.
He was 10lb. Funnily enough though it was actually my favourite birth despite the size. I dont think its necessarily the size that makes a difference to the experience as much as you might think

happytoday73 · 29/10/2021 11:20

Yes and they were. 2nd baby was bigger and was a great delivery

SpangoDweller · 29/10/2021 11:20

The midwife at my 40 week appt said DS would definitely be over 10lb. 4 days later he was born at 8lb 5oz which I think is pretty average.

Alicenwonderland · 29/10/2021 11:25

When I was pregnant with my third DS I knew he was going to be big! He felt so much bigger inside me than the others had, huge bump ect ect but the midwives kept saying "He's not big, he'll be about 7lb". He was 9lb and got stuck! I don't think they can tell really 🤪

ElftonWednesday · 29/10/2021 11:25

With DD1 I was measuring small for dates, so I had some extra scans at the end and then then said she's actually going to be a big baby- 9lbs plus.

She was 8lbs exactly born at 41 weeks.

DD2 I was measuring spot on for dates, I was given no indication as to size (though though she might be bigger than DD1) and she was 9lbs 2oz at 41 weeks.

Then I stopped there, lest I keep having babies 1lb odd bigger each time!

PairofPears · 29/10/2021 11:27

Yes predicted a 10lb-er and he was 10lb 2oz. Induced on due date.

ElleGettingBetter · 29/10/2021 11:28

Yes, tested for GD (negative) and agreed to induce at 40 weeks to stop me going over.

Baby was 11lb 2oz

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 11:33

a bigger head circumference can be way more problematic than a heavier body weight - and longer heavier baby might be easier to push than a smaller shorter one!

so don't worry about weight so much

TakeYourFinalPosition · 29/10/2021 11:35

I had two scans yesterday; by two different senior sonographers... one estimated the weight at 4lbs2, and one at 6lbs. Both are within the margins of error, so both are valid, apparantly.

My bump is gigantic and I'm measuring 6 weeks ahead; but they have no idea why.

It all seems to be a bit of an elaborate guessing game, which I guess is why the NICE guidelines say that early induction/c-sections shouldn't be offered for big babies alone.

Yup. My DS was 9lb1 but I think about 8lb of that was his head 😬 Even the midwife joked afterwards that I was walking like John Wayne.

Pretty sure it was inherited from DH, who can only buy stretchy hats as nothing normal fits.

BelieveInRainbows · 29/10/2021 11:38

I was told DS1 was measuring small but he was 9lb 6oz at 41+5 weeks. DS2 was measuring 'average' and was 10lb 8oz at 38 weeks. I was glad he didn't cook for longer Grin

spaceghetto · 29/10/2021 11:45

Yes. Ds 1 was born 3 weeks early and was almost 9lb. Ds2 was a few days over due and almost 10lb

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 12:02

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

8lb head🤣

I was walking like John Wayne after DS3, not so much because of his 9lb 6oz but because I was pushing with my knees almost touching my shoulders😳
it was worth it though, he was out on the 3rd push. he shot out of me like rocket, the unxpecting midwife almost dropped him 🤣

BurningBenches · 29/10/2021 12:03

My babies have all been bigger than average but not what I'd consider really big.

1, 2 and 3 predate growth scans and were 8lb11, 8lb15 and 9lb10.

Dc4 was born in 2019. Our hospital had introduced routine growth scans at 36wks. At 37wks when I had mine he was supposedly already 9lb. So a predicted birth weight of 10lb7 at 40wks or 11lb7 at 42wks. I tend to go to 42wks so was offered an induction at 40wks. He was only 9lb5! So about a pound less than predicted.

Dc5 was supposed to be 6lb9 at 36wks which I was told was average (but would have put her at 8lb9 at 40wks which I'm prettysure is bigger than average) . She was born at 41wks weighing 9lb. So that scan whilst confusing was accurate. She came out with her hand by her head like superman.

CornishGem1975 · 29/10/2021 12:09

Yes, was induced early after lots of growth scans (due to previous shoulder dystocia mainly) and the baby was 99.6th centile and 1lb heavier than expected!

Kittyswhiskers · 29/10/2021 12:43

It seems like there’s lots of variation in what we are told!

I’m not worried about weight at all as baby will be arriving by section Grin I was just interested really as to what others were told!

At 32 weeks DD was measured at 7lb 4. Arrived at 37+1 after a long labour and an emergency section weighing 6lb 13
