Empty sac 6 weeks pregnant

Trigger warning

Looking for some advice. I'm 6 weeks pregnant. I had an early scan due to spotting at 5 weeks and another scan today. They tell me it's likely a blighted ovum meaning the egg is growing and the hormones are rising but they can't see a yolk sac or a baby. I'm seeing a specialist Tuesday to confirm and give me my options. I can pass naturally but as my body thinks I'm pregnant still it could take me to 13 weeks pregnant with all the symptoms of pregnancy like morning sickness etc etc before I fully miscarry. I could take medication but this medication is really bad for you it's the stuff they give chemo patients. Or a d and c which can cause scarring and potentially cause more infertility issues. Also I'm scared of being put to sleep even though I have been before. Iv read some success stories of people being told it's an empty sac to suddenly having a baby there but to be very honest it's extremely unlikely. I'm very upset and I feel pain like I'm having a bad period but no blood loss just minor spotting that stops and starts every few days. I don't really know what I'm asking for but any advice would be great x

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I had a blighted ovum at the end of last year that was found after going for a scan when i should have been 10 weeks. I am currently pregnant again and went for a scan at almost 7 weeks and again they could only see an empty sac, no fetal pole or yolk sac, even with a transvaginal scan. I fully believed that it was another blighted ovum but at my follow up appointment 10 days later there was a baby measuring 8 weeks 3 days exactly as there should be. Everyone was surprised and my midwife said it was very unusual so I don't want to give you false hope but if you are 6 weeks then there is a chance it is still too early. Hoping for the best for you x

Just to add i have also had some early spotting on and off in this pregnancy.
If you should unfortunately need treatment, is an MVA an option for you? I had it after my blighted ovum, it is a form of surgery where you are not put to sleep. I found it fairly painless and a quick recovery. I think there are some risks involved, same as the other options but it was the best option out of an awful situation for me x

Sorry you are going through this. I had a blighted ovum found at 8 weeks. I opted for medical management (tablets) which didn't work and I still had a positive pg test 4 weeks later and ended up on antibiotics for infection due to retained products. I opted against medical management the second time round and decided to let nature take its course, i bled on and off like you are describing and I finally had a negative test after 18 weeks. The experience on the whole I didn't find too traumatic it just felt like it took forever. I haven't tried to conceive since but I know its relatively common and doesnt affect conceiving in the future. Thanks

Thank you for the reply. I'm trying to not get my hopes up but there is always that small hope I'll see something on Tuesday. I'm thinking I might let it pass naturally. I just hope if there is no hope that it happens quickly. I'm getting lots of period type pains but the bleeding has stopped again. I guess it's just a waiting game I'm going to try and concentrate on Christmas and my little 6 year old. I tell myself I'm so blessed to have a child already. But it still hurts. I think wether you have kids or not or wether your 6 weeks or 6 months any loss is upsetting. I think the worst part is not knowing and being in limbo. Or having to wait weeks for it to pass. Having pregnancy symptoms and knowing it will end in miscarriage I suspect will be the hardest. I'll keep a small light of hope alive but I think I need to try and prepare for a hard few weeks. And give myself permission to be upset and grieve. I just wish it wasn't so painful and tiring 😕 x

Sorry you went through this. Did you find letting it pass naturally was better and less risk to you x

@Kelly7113 I cant say for sure which is "better" as I the pills didnt really work so I only experienced mild-moderate cramping and there wasnt a huge amount of blood. Naturally it was over such a long period and quite light bleeding and I didnt have to take any time off work. If it did happen again however I probably would go for the tablets again. I dont know if it wasnt as bad as I was expecting because there wasnt actually a foetus there.. all the best

Kelly7113 · 02/11/2021 19:09

It's still empty not even a yolk sac but they said it's only been 9 days since they first saw the egg and things can grow in a day so I have to have another scan in 2 weeks. it's still unlikely to be a healthy pregnancy but there's still a possibility it is so I have no answers still 😔 just more waiting with all the pregnancy symptoms but probs no baby I'll either miscarry before scan or after scan or there may be a miracle baby there but it's unlikely x

Unfortunately mine was a blighted ovum which was diagnosed at 8 weeks. I had three choices surgery to remove it, medication to remove it, or natural home miscarriage, I went for natural. I'm 10 weeks today and only bleeding slightly, it's taking a long time, and it's hard. I hope you have better news than I did huni. Maybe you are earlier than you think you are? X

hmm i really don't think so :-( . My transfer was October 18th. Egg was just 3 days old... one time I had a light yellow discharge. but smallllll...u think this might have been the yellow sack? I'm not really bleeding at all....just liiiiight brown discharge.. One doctor in Barnet had told me to stop progesteron..this was a week ago.. and i did :-(. u think this might have something to do with why is not developing? Thanks for writing back and I'm very sorry for your experience...Don't give up! People try many times/ at least 3 before it is successful...

Hi kelly! I hope you are ok. I hope it goes easy for you. Is paracetamol helping for the pain? I’m sorry you are going through this. Yes I’m giving it a go, taking progesterone etc, though i have kind of let go of eating. Just had to Mcdonald’s burgers last night… feeding super super down. I have done it w sperm donnor so not much support in my family. I’m single. This was my Kat scan. It be pretty hard to recover from this, but who knows, universe-god-works miracles like it did with the lady Above. I’m 6 weeks exactly today. Here is my last scan. Was yours similar?

Yours seems to have a flying sorcer I think it could be the start of a yolk sac. Mine was completely empty yours looks like it has something x
