I went to my midwife appointment today at my doctors, the midwife wasn’t my usual midwife. She told me that he won’t come on his due date and that he will be late but I’m struggling to understand how she knows this? On his growth chart he is on the 50th percentile where he should be. Does anyone know why she told me this?

Percentiles don't mean anything in relation to when babies will be born, they come when they're ready.

The midwife doesn't know when that will be either. She's probably just going with the fact that very rarely are babies actually born on their due date as it's only an estimate to begin with. First babies are often born 'late' but it's not guaranteed. I had my first 5 days before he was due.

In short, disregard her comment x

Thank you for the reply! I was just struggling how she would know because the way she said it was saying he will defiantly come late but I know many babies are also born early! I think I will ignore what she said and push it out of my mind. He will come when he is ready! X

I’ve seen a midwife who is convinced baby won’t come on their due date too - she was adamant that she’s never seen a first baby not come late.

It’s one of those things, like every midwife predicts what gender we’re having, and they are always adamant that they are totally sure but it’s literally a 50% split between girl and boy guesses Grin

To be honest… so many mums have 40 weeks in their heads and are frustrated, fed up and disappointed when they go over. She may have been trying to help manage your expectations a bit.

On the other hand you could be like me, expecting to go to 42 weeks and having your waters go early! (36.5 weeks!)

Thanks for your replies! I know it is more likely to go over especially when it’s your first baby I was just confused how she knew for certain! Maybe your right and she was just saying expectations. He will come when he is ready and I am happy with whenever that will be Grin x
