6w1d, 1.9mm fetal pole but no heartbeat on U/S

Hi there,

I had a reassurance scan this morning. I'm 6w1d and they found:

  • 13mm mean gestational sac
  • 4mm mean yolk sac
  • 1.9mm fetal pole

They said it was too early/ small for a heartbeat.

Is this unusual? I feel really quite worried about it.

I had a scan at 6+4 with my first pregnancy and the sonographer said the heartbeat had probably only started beating a day or two before. You're just right at the time the heartbeat begins to be visible.

Was it abdominal or transvaginal? It's very early for a scan and they often don't give 'reassurance' because it's so hard to see anything. 7+ weeks is best time I think - you'll definitely see a heartbeat by then and it'll be less of a tiny dot.

It was transvaginal. I'm just feeling super anxious that this might be a bad sign, so thank you so much for that reassurance :)

For what it's worth, a private scan at 7w3d showed the baby stopped growing at 6w3d size and although it had a faint heartbeat still, it would 99% result in miscarriage.

EPU scan at 8w to confirm :(

Hi I had my scan this week 7 week 2days baby measuring 6 weeks 4 days. I've got to go back next week. Have you been today for a scan is that what they've said to you?

WorriedGirl91 · 07/11/2021 20:13

I went on Friday to a private clinic (so not EPU where I went at 6w1d). EPU again on Tuesday (should have been 8w scan).

The private clinic said I had a 99% chance of miscarriage because

  • 1.3mm growth in 8/9 days instead of 8/9mm
  • enlarged yolk sac
  • very faint heart beat

I honestly hope your scan next week goes ok. For me it wasn’t that it was dating differently, it was the ominously low growth in 8/9 days.

My worries were because I’ve spotted tiny amounts of red/ pink/ brown throughout, I mean small specks (often singular speck) when wiping but cause for real worry. I had some nausea which then went, but my boobs are still very painful and tender.

It’s my second loss in 6 months and I’m devastated. I’m 30 and jsut feel like this is more than bad luck.

I hope all goes ok with your repeat scan. What did the doctor say?

I had an ectopic rule out scan at 5+4 and there was no heartbeat. Yolk sac seen, but no embryo or heartbeat yet. They said it was really normal. And don’t forget, your dating is fairly inaccurate at that stage unless you know the exact day you conceived and ovulated. A few days in either direction can make a big difference in what is seen!
Wishing you all the very best - my yolk sac with no heartbeat is now 8 weeks old, so there is hope 😊😊

Good luck for Tuesday really hope all goes OK for you. My appt was cause ive had ivf, she said that everything looks OK but the baby is measuring small. So I'm hoping this week it has grown. There was a heartbeat. But she said to me to be prepared for the worst I dunno why. But fingers crossed for both of us that we are ok. And the babies grow. Don't lose hope. Keep the faith.
