Eating Dates

I've just started eating dates today
It suggests 75g online and my god how do people eat them?!?! ConfusedEnvy

I used to eat dates too as I liked them but I'm only 3 out of 11 dates down and I'm barely doing it. And it's day 1!!

Any ideas how to eat them and not taste them or use them in something ?

Why eat them if you aren’t enjoying them…this is very odd!

LittleBearPad · 25/10/2021 20:00

Why in the name of god are you forcing down dates?

WheelieBinPrincess · 25/10/2021 20:00

Why do you need to eat dates Confused

11 in a day? I ate them for my pregnancy but think it was only about 4 per day to get to 75g

Caspianberg · 25/10/2021 20:06

11?

I ate them in pregnancy. 6 regular or 3 large dates per day is enough. I cut up and added to granola, the milk reduces sweetness.

Kittyswhiskers · 25/10/2021 20:07

What does eating dates do?

lililou · 25/10/2021 20:09

I've had them microwaved with peanut butter and chocolate before. Something a bit like this: servingupsimplicity.net/nut-butter-stuffed-dates/

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 25/10/2021 20:12

Stuff them with gorgonzola, wrap in prosciutto and fry them.

omfgimgettingmarried · 25/10/2021 20:12

I know.. I used to love them but I don't think I've eaten dates once since giving birth. I did have a really quick labour though Grin

For those asking:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32563673/

I think medjool are supposed to be best but can't remember where I read that.

SweetSunflowerBoo · 25/10/2021 20:14

It's said to help shorten labour and soften your cervix.

75g measured to 11 dates.

Thank you to those who suggested how to eat them

I like dates, but 11 is a lot! As mentioned upthread I ate 6 regular or 3 medjool dates a day. Usually half cut up on my muesli/porridge for breakfast and the other half with a cup of tea in the afternoon. That amount worked a treat - was induced 11 days early and midwife was surprised I was already 2cm and “very stretchy” (first baby). Baby was born 12 hours later after just a pessary. So I’d say you can cut down on the dates and still get good results. Good luck!

SweetSunflowerBoo · 25/10/2021 21:31

@Peelspeelspeels yes I'm definitely going to half the amount of dates!! Wayyyy too many otherwise. Thank you

75g of medjool dates is like 3/4, and they are DELICIOUS!

bake them into a flapjack and have an excuse to eat copious amounts of flapjack then...

In your porridge as a natural sweetener, chop them and cook it slowly on the hob, it melts the dates in, very tasty

MilkywayMonarch22 · 25/10/2021 21:40

I ate shed loads of them and still had a 36 hr labour 🤦🏾‍♀️ no tears at all though despite epidural and quick pushing phase!

InTheLabyrinth · 25/10/2021 21:45

You need to buy decent dates.
Not the ones I remember from my childhood christmases in a little oval box with a plastic fork that are dry and stringy. They are Envy unless cooked into sticky toffee pudding.
BUT, I lived in the middle east for a while, and man oh man, dates can be delicious. I used to buy boxes of ones with the stone removed and candied orange peel in its place. DH liked the ones with a whole nut in the middle. Yummy. Anyway, buy decent (read expensive) dates. No idea of brands over here tho.

nomorespaghetti · 25/10/2021 21:47

Wrap them in bacon and grill, delicious!

Ulrichamelo · 25/10/2021 21:48

Stuffed with cashew butter

NovRainbow5 · 25/10/2021 21:51

I’ve been “eating” 8 a day. I put them in a smoothie with a whole banana, tsp of peanut butter and almond milk. It’s delicious x

JuneySunshine · 25/10/2021 22:02

@SweetSunflowerBoo Sorry, I'm no help but just wondered when you're supposed to start to help with labour? Third trimester?

Third trimester yes- I've waited until 36 weeks to be safe

Medjool stuffed with peanut butter, a little salt sprinkled over and put in freezer are really delicious. They have a Snickers type flavour.

JuneySunshine · 25/10/2021 22:09

@SweetSunflowerBoo Thank you, hope some of these recipes help 😋

LittleBearPad · 25/10/2021 22:16

Which Date producer has come up with this theory?

Hairyfriend · 25/10/2021 22:20

Large medjool date, stuff with stilton, wrap in bacon and grill

Large medjool date, stuff with ground almond paste or a whole almond

Sticky date pudding

I'm sure you are aware that dates are VERY high in sugar?
