Does heart function decrease in pregnancy?

I’m monitored because of an inherited gene which can cause cardiomyopathy in my family. So far I’ve been fine but today when I went for an echo she mentioned decreased heart function.

Said it was normal in pregnancy and not to worry unless the consultant contacted me but obviously I’m worried.

I can’t find any information on this, everything I find talks about the heart having to work more in pregnant but not about actual decreased function. Does anyone know anything?

I don't know for sure but like you, it was my understanding that the heart works harder in order to pump the extra blood that pregnant women produce.

If you're concerned then ask to speak to your consultant to get some clarification for your own leave of mind x

I’ve got a direct email for the cardiomyopathy nurse who works in clinic with my consultant so I sent her an email tonight and she usually replies quite quickly so hoping I can get some clarification from her.

She didn’t explicitly say my heart function is decreased just that some decrease in heart function is normal in pregnancy so I’m very confused! Which they could just be transparent.

I’ve also got an appointment with my obstetric consultant tomorrow so even though it’s not her area I may ask her if she thinks it’s worth chasing up with the cardiologist.

Thanks for replying!
