Second trimester bleeding

I'm 21 weeks along and I've had a couple of light bleeding episodes in the last two days. Both times I've been in to hospital and they've checked the baby. He looks fine but the placenta is lying low so that's where they think the blood is coming from.

I am trying to be calm but it's obviously pretty terrifying to see blood in your pants when you're pregnant.

Does anyone have any experience of this, and preferably success stories? I don't know whether to expect this every day from now on or if I should be worried every time (which I will be). They said it may improve if the placenta moves up over time... which it should apparently do.

I am just panicking a bit as I had such a straightforward pregnancy last time and this feels scary.

I had this with my twins from 28 weeks onwards except it did get progressively worse with massive clots - each time babies were fine and it was put down to a very low lying placenta. They were born early at 34 weeks after one placenta detached but they were healthy and just had a NICU stay of a couple of weeks

Thanks @tiggerwhocamefortea good to know that your two were fine!

I'm in the same position. I head bleeding from about 9 to 16 weeks every day, a couple of weeks off then a few more episodes since then. I'm now 20 weeks. I've also been told I've got a low lying placenta but that it's less severe (no longer covereing my cervix completely) than at 12 weeks and hopefully it will completely resolve in the next few months. I don't have an outcome yet but interested to see if anyone else does.

Ah sorry to hear you're in the same boat @GingerKombucha. It's good that it's moving in the right direction though, hope that continues for you. Apparently it does self-resolve for 9 out of 10 women who have this issue.

They've booked me in for a trans vaginal scan in a few weeks although I really hope things have improved by then.

i had the same thing at exactly 30 weeks. Started bleeding heavily and went to the hospital where i was taken straight to delivery and given steriods. The baby was delivered at exactly 31weeks by emcs. Stayed in neonatal for 5 weeks.

Hi @babouchette I’m not as far along as you but I am currently 15 weeks and I’ve had bleeding over half of the time I’ve been pregnant 🙈 at 11 weeks I had one particular bad episode losing clots. They can’t see a reason for my bleeding on the scans, and I saw baby today and they were fine, but doesn’t stop you worrying does it! xx

babouchette · 20/10/2021 21:36

Oh no, how stressful for you! Have they had a look at your placenta yet? Perhaps they'll work it out at your 20 week scan. Best of luck. I wish there was a magic pill we could take to stop the bleeds!

Hi @babouchette I’m not sure if your reply was for me, but I’m replying anyway 😂

At my 12 week scan and 14 week scan they said I had posterior placenta which I don’t think should be causing bleeding.
I had bleeding again yesterday so I’m booked in for a more in depth scan at EPU next week. It’s so hard to wait that long, but I find a&e unhelpful so I’m not going there unless it gets painful.
How are you now? xx
