Pregnant with no real idea how far along I am. Is it worth going for a private scan? Anyone else in the same boat?

I had my implant removed on the 6th of September to TTC. I did ask my GP when my period would return and she said it should come back within the following couple of months but she did say that I may experience withdrawal bleeding within a fortnight. On the 10th of September I did have a bleed which lasted a good few days.

I felt really funny the weekend just been. A bit bloated, felt a bit queasy , not much mind and my breasts were very heavy and sore to touch so did a test on the Sunday (17th of October) and a another test yesterday (18th) and I'm definitely pregnant!

Here lies the problem. Due to no period my Midwife, who I spoke to today, has no real idea how far along I am. She agreed the bleed I had on the 10th was more than likely a withdrawal bleed but she still has to count it as a period so she could use it to attempt to date my pregnancy and so I'm down as 7 weeks pregnant on her notes. I also use the app Flo (was planning to use it to aid in TTC) and that's saying I'm 5+5 today. My two previous pregnancies it took a few months for me to conceive and I knew pretty much how far along I was due to a previous periods.

I'm utterly confused! Is it worth maybe going for a private scan in a few weeks to get a clearer picture of how far a long I am or just wait until my 12 week scan? I know it's probably just my hormones but I'm feeling kind of sad and very frustrated that I just don't really know. I also probably sound very silly but it's nice to vent to you guys.

Usually you'd be offered a scan at the EPU if you have little idea of how far along you are. Ask your midwife, I would think she'd be able to refer you.

I had this; I came off the pill and had a bit of spotting which I thought was a period but then 2/3 weeks later I started getting some very familiar sickness in the morning so by workings out I couldn’t work out how far along I was as based on the bleed being a period I was very early but clear blue test suggested I was further along and the hospital couldn’t offer me a scan for another month.
Sorry that was a long story; I paid for a private scan as I couldn’t cope with not knowing and turned out to be 7 weeks so could at least plan appointments in line with that after

I didnt know how far along I was, just went to booking appointment bloods explained I'd felt the baby kicking so the midwife listened to the heart beat and sent me for a scan asap. I thought I was about 8 weeks until I felt the kicking. Scan dated me at 23 weeks!

Hello,

This does sound confusing!

I didn't really have the same experience as I did know when I conceived. But, due to midwife going off LMP despite my long cycle I was sent for my 12 week scan at 10 weeks. This was too early to take all the measurements needed so they just booked me in again for 13 weeks. They like to be on the early side as if they were to underestimate how far along you were they might miss 14 weeks which is the upper limit for the 12w scan measurements.

I'm sure what they'll do for you is send you early, then once they have dates to work with you can always pop back again. Personally, I'd save the money for the private scan and let them work it out like this. I'm not entirely sure they would trust the dating from a private scan anyway so this seems like the best bet.

Good luck with it x

Your health care providers will figure out a due date if you just give them some time. They want that in your notes as much as you do. You don’t need to pay for a private scan.

I wasn't sure for similar reasons to yours and was referred to the EPU for a scan. I also took one of those Clear Blue tests that's supposed to tell you how many weeks you are and that was accurate for me confirmed at the EPU
