New mattress for moses basket from friend?

Hi all,

My friend dropped off a moses basket for me yesterday which has been used with both of his kids (the eldest is 6 at the start of next year and the youngest will be 1 at the start of next year).

Do I need to buy a new mattress for it? I know the family and know it will have been well looked after...but I obviously don't know every intricate detail of it. I was just wondering with it 'only' being a moses basket if it was necessary.

Get a new mattress. If anything happened to your baby and you hadn't, you'd never forgive yourself.

Always buy a new mattress for a secondhand crib, basket or cot.

Definitely get a new mattress. I’m sure it’s been well looked after and is probably fine but they do loose firmness over time with use. I am planning to replace our crib mattress for our second baby.

I read that you should buy new mattresses for any new child of your own, so would agree to get a new one.

Yes. Just last week my MW told me to get a new mattress for our crib (only been 3 years since DS1 used it). I would have automatically with anything second hand but it didn't occur to me for something we'd owned from new, but I will.

I was thinking, worst case, I buy a standard single bed blanket and then cut and sew it.

They make sheets specifically for them too!
