5 weeks pregnant - is this normal?

Hi there,

I’m new to this forum, having just found out I’m pregnant.

I’m spending a lot of time stressing that my pregnancy is not viable.

I was calculated as being at close to 7 weeks, however had a scan where they had to go into my hoo-ha for a good look and the size of the sack was 8mm, so they guessed 5 weeks instead based on the sac size.

I have to go in again in two weeks to see if anything has changed, but my GP has warned me it may be a “blighted ovum”.

What concerns me is I’ve had no pregnancy symptoms for a while - the cramping I had is gone, no tender or heavy breasts, no nausea, and all my energy is back.

I’m truly scared and not sure I can hold it together for two weeks.

Im just wondering if anyone had a similar experience, including with symptoms. I also don’t know if the sac size is “normal” for this stage of pregnancy.

Any advice would be so great. Thank you in advance.

I should clarify that there was no yolk visible on the scan either.

When did you first get a positive test?

Symptoms can fluctuate a lot and I don't really get many symptoms until 6 weeks when the nausea kicks in so I wouldn't worry based on that alone. Sadly it might just be a case of waiting to see, which is horrible to have to go through but a week or so can make a big difference in what they're able to see.

Hi.
No it’s not normal.
Blighted ovum is where a baby will not develop, it’s an empty sac.
Symptoms can be very strong or can disappear but it’s a miscarriage.
The two week wait is to allow anything to develop.
It’s a difficult wait and on the meantime you may start to bleed and loose the pregnancy.

Other people will come on and say that they had similar and in 2 weeks a baby could be seen, I hope that this is your happy ending.

@Mezzalenko
I had a scan of what I thought I was 7 weeks was only measuring 5+6 weeks went on to have a miscarriage I knew it was not going to turn out good news as I have had 2 miscarriages before that that was my 3rd and have had another one so 4 in total.

When did you get a positive test, on a five week Scan nt much can be seen. But it you tests positive like 3 weeks ago you know in your own head you would be more than 5 weeks pregnant.

Thank you for all the comments.

I had positive pregnancy tests on the weekend of 2/3 October. Didn’t take tests before this so honestly not sure if I am or should be further along than five weeks. Saw the doctor last week - had the urine and blood to confirm pregnancy and had the scan just this week.

Thank you. I know a blighted ovum isn’t normal, I was more asking whether anyone had dealt with the same thing as I have and had everything turn out fine.

I know it’s a very real possibility I may lose the pregnancy though.

Thank you for your response and well wishes. Flowers

I posted on the feed rather than directly to you. Whoops. I’ll get the hang of this haha!

She calculated from period date, despite my having a clear idea of when conception was due to my tracker and the fact my husband and I spend separated periods on and off because of his work. If conception happened when I think it did, then I would be 5 weeks as estimated.

It will definitely be a wait and see game I guess. If nothing bad happens in the next two weeks, I’ll know more in two weeks.

@Mezzalenko had my scan at what was 6+ weeks from lmp I was only measuring 5 weeks and just a sac and nothing else. Had to go back a week later and there was a baby and a heartbeat and I was still measuring under 6 weeks. I am now almost 10 weeks so all being well everything is still growing in there, I have bad morning sickness, metal taste in my mouth and gone off a lot of foods so fingers crossed x

Hey 👋🏼

I had a similar experience - going by my LMP and when I thought we conceived I thought I would've been roughly 6 weeks when I had an early scan for one sided pain. They couldn't see anything (not even a sac...) and said either eptopic, miscarriage or too early. They took bloods which didn't double in 48 hours .. went back for a scan and I was suddenly measuring 7weeks 2days and baby in right place with a heartbeat. Baby completely fine at 12 week scan and I'm nearly 14 weeks now and dates seem to have corrected themselves (weird!!!) xx hang in there xx

@Mezzalenko
Hey there, did you end up going for another scan?
In the same boat currently so also a bit stressed
I had a blighted ovum miscarriage on the 19th of August when I should have been 11 weeks but the sac was only 4-5 weeks and empty.

Miscarried naturally and continued bleeding until the 5th of September. I took a test on the 15th, which was negative. Took another test with a different brand on the 24th which was a faint positive. It’s possible the first test didn’t pick up leftover hormones from the miscarriage which is a hope I’m clinging to.

I had a bit of spotting and very very mind cramping on the 15th of this month so I took another test (different brand again) and it picked up a very strong positive (test stronger than control) so I booked in an ultrasound expecting to be about 8 weeks counting from the faint positive only to see a 4-5 week empty sac again

So do you think it’s a blighted ovum again or it is possible the first test was from my miscarriage and the second strong positive was picked up at 3 weeks 2 days, thereby making my dates correct? ( a long stretch I know)

Sorry to barge in on your post, haven’t had any feedback on mine so thought I might get a quicker response on hereFlowers
Wishing you all the best and I hope things work out on your end

Hi! In my case, it was a blighted ovum and I miscarried. I miscarried on Saturday just gone actually and am still in pain, though the internal ultrasound my doctor told me to go ahead with confirmed that everything has cleared out and the lining has repaired itself. My bloods show my BHCG has dropped really fast.

As for your case, I’m not sure. One blighted ovum doesn’t mean you’ll have another. Have you spoken to your doctor? I would think it all depends on when you had sex and your date of ovulation, not necessarily the pregnancy tests which can sometimes cause a bit of confusion. They pick up BHCG levels in your urine - I’m not sure if there’s traces after a miscarriage or not, and whether those are strong enough to be picked up by a pregnancy test (or enough to show faint positives or whatever). Your best bet is asking your doctor - if you have the answer to the sex and the ovulation question, how should be able to work out how far along you are roughly. Because it’s all happened so close to your miscarriage and you haven’t had a regular period in between (that’s right, isn’t it?), you may have to go back to your period before you were pregnant the first time and, if you’re regular, they could work out your cycle from there and calculate your ovulation date to work out how far along you might be. They’ll also be able to look at blood test histories - after your miscarriage, did you do regular blood tests to ensure your BHCG dropped to zero, like I have been doing? Have you had a recent blood test to see what your BHCG levels are and whether your doctor thinks these are where they should be for how far along you’re estimated to be? These can all paint a picture or give an idea as to the pregnancy.

Again, I’m not a doctor. I can’t tell you whether you have a blighted ovum or not. You need to speak to your doctor and tell your doctor everything and ask your doctor to lay it all out on the table for you honestly. I truly understand your fear, but your fear would truly be best addressed by a doctor, not me and my truly shocking lack id knowledge of the basics of the reproductive system! I wish I could give you answers, but I don’t know enough to do so. Instead, I am thinking of you and I hope you get your rainbow baby. Please let me know how you go. Flowers

I’m so sorry for your lossFlowers

So I was told to come back after 2 weeks for a rescan but I’ve started bleeding so I’m waiting for the miscarriage to happen naturally. I’ll go back for a rescan once it’s done to make sure there’s nothing left behind and will probably wait a while before trying again. Thank you for your kind words.

All the best to you in the future Flowers
