I've been told I have low lying placenta. But last couple of days been having bleeds and large clots. Been hospital had scan and internal which both are fine. Been sent home and advised to monitor. Can anyone help and advised this is normal as other people I've spoke to said never experienced this

Hi, sorry you’re going through this. Has the bleeding stopped?

There’s loads of info online about low lying placenta. 9 out of 10 times it will move. Bleeding with low lying placenta is not normal, but it is common.

Have you had your 20 week scan yet? That will confirm it and then you’ll be invited to have another one at 32 weeks to see if it’s moved. Ask about location of placenta, how close it is to cervix etc. as it will arm you with more info (unless you’d rather not know!)

I was told mine is low lying at my 20 weeks scan. Had a massive bleed at 26 weeks and was given steroids etc in case the baby had to be delivered early. Luckily, the bleeding stopped after 24 hours or so and I was discharged 2 days after that. I’m to take it easy for now they said, and if it happens again, need to go straight to hospital. My one is completely covering the cervix so it’s major placenta previa and it’s posterior though, which is the ‘worst kind’! And it means mine is unlikely to move. I’m further along than you though so you still have a very good chance of it moving up.

My mam had a low placenta with me (obviously we are talking a long time ago) - at the time she was put on bed rest.

Call your midwives and speak to them.

Bleeding has sort of stopped my 20 week scan is tomorrow. I am having scans at 28/32/36 weeks growth scans so will be montior at same time I guess. I have been told its covering the cervix also and been told if bleed more then to go back in also I've been losing the old blood as they call it for about 3weeks now and only recently the red blood has started. They told me I'm to expect more also but they don't really tell me anymore which is why I thought I would post on here as no one seems to tell me anymore or my midwife

Sounds like you’ve been given the same expectations and advice as me. I don’t think there’s much more the healthcare professionals can say or do at this stage, except monitor you with scans and wait and see.

I’d be prepared. It’s depressing to do it so early but pack your hospital bag now in case you have another bleed and have to go in again and are kept in. Keep your notes handy at all times. Tell your work and they should make reasonable adjustments for you in the meantime. Your GP may sign you off if you’re worried but they may not put you on bed rest so much these days unless you have significant and recurring bleeds, and if that does happen, they may just keep you in at hospital.

Try not to worry, my advice is to take each week as it comes and celebrate each milestone e.g 24 weeks is viability, 28 weeks is 3rd trimester etc. Good luck :)
