I know you need to go to your 12 week scan with a full bladder, but do you need to also go to your 20 week scan with full bladder

I'm not sure. My 20 week scan is next month and I haven't thought about the bladder thing!

You could always go with a full bladder and ask when you arrive if they need you to empty it or not?

At my 20 week scan in August I was asked in my appointment letter to have a full bladder. The sonographer had a look at the baby then I went to the loo and she did the rest of the measurements

catinthehat12 · 12/10/2021 08:53

I didn’t, but I have been told I am very scannable. At my 12 week scan, the lady did say that I wouldn’t need to have a full bladder at the next scan.
They also were a bit heavier with the pressure on my stomach this time, so I was glad to get away without.

I was wondering this. My letter told you too for 12 weeks but no mention for 20 weeks, so I kind of assumed not. I don't know if it depends on the equipment the hospital has.
I think I'll probably do as I've done previously and have 1 pint 1 hour beforehand. If it's unnecessary that's fine but if you don't drink enough and you're meant to it could become a problem.

I didn’t need to for my 20 week scans. Only the 12 week one. Baby should be high up enough at 20 weeks for them to get a decent view

BinkyRidesForth · 12/10/2021 09:04

My letter from the hospital said I had to drink a pint of water an hour before which wasn’t too bad. For the 12 week scan it was 2 pints (and they sent me to go and empty it halfway through the scan!)

I was asked to drink a pint of fluid an hour before and to not empty my bladder. At the first (20wk) scan I was asked to empty my bladder (I had to have a rescan due to baby’s position) but for the 2nd one, it was fine with a full bladder. I think it’s best to drink around a pint of fluid and not go to the toilet and then they will ask you to empty your bladder if needed.

Mine said make sure you are well hydrated but didn't need a full bladder.

ButFirstTea · 12/10/2021 10:18

My letter specifically said not to, so I just drank my normal amount on the day and was still asked to go to the loo halfway through the scan! I think it also depends on where baby is and how easy they are to see.

AnnaSW1 · 12/10/2021 10:24

You mostly don't need a full bladder nowadays. If there's no mention of it don't go with a full bladder.

Fagin99 · 12/10/2021 10:26

Please don't take my word for it, but my sonographer told me at my 12 week scan that a full bladder is really only necessary if the person is overweight as it helps to give a clearer picture. Might be best to check though.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 12/10/2021 10:36

My letters for both 12 and 20 week scans said full bladder. I mean I didn't go with it full, but I did make sure to have plenty water beforehand...not to the point I was fit to burst though.
