If you have lots of pg sickness, does it lead to a bigger baby?

I'm asking as my doctor keeps saying that my ongoing sickness (now 18 weeks) is a sign of a 'strong' pregnancy and that my bump is growing well so not to worry about the sickness. He's all 'trust me, i've seen it all' and gives me the impression that lots of sickness means a big healthy baby! maybe he is just trying to get me to be less concerned about the bloody sickness. i had no sickness at all with DS, and he was 6lb 14oz at full term. just wondered what your experiences suggested...?

Not sure - think your doc may just mean that you have lots of hormones necessary for a healthy pregnancy. Lots of sympathy for you ongoing sickness hope it settles soon. I had no sickness DD weighed in a 7lb 14oz my friend who had lots of sickness delivered a DD 7lb 10oz ....

He just means that you have lots of hormones whizzing about, and is trying to reassure you that the baby isn't adversely affected by the sickness.
Some women react to the hormones by throwing up, some don't.
Sickness bears no relation to the size of baby at all.

Ds1 sick all day every day for exactly 15 weeks.9lbs 2oz.
Ds2 sick on and off right up til the end.8lbs 6oz
Ds3 can't remember but I was sicky-the heartburn bothered me alot more. 8lbs 6oz.

dd no pregnancy symptoms at all - healthy baby 6lb 8oz - now 8 and is hardly ever sick.

on my second pregnancy 7 weeks gone no sypmtons as yet except sore boobs and a little bit of weight loss.

Weegle · 08/12/2007 13:23

Gosh I never heard that before but my anecdotal evidence agrees with him: I was very very sick with DS and he was 12lb 12oz.

Weegle · 08/12/2007 13:24

the midwife also said at 16 weeks (when still in full throes of sickness) that the cord had the strongest pulse she had ever heard - she said "you're certainly feeding that baby well"... just anecdotal though...

bubblagirl · 08/12/2007 13:33

i had real bad sickness all through pregnancy baby had growth spurt and every one told me he would 8 half pound but he was 7lb 1oz when born midwife was very suprised

think some of us are just unlucky

OhGiveUsAPruniPudding · 08/12/2007 13:51

I was hospitalised with sickness and ds was 6.6lbs at 38 weeks.

There's a theory that the more hCG you have, the more likely the pregnancy is to continue well, and that hCG contributes to pregnancy sickness. I don't know how true this is though.

camillathechicken · 08/12/2007 13:55

I was sick 3 times a day on average from week 5 until week 34 , with DS who was born 39 + 1 and weighed 7 lb 13

with DD i was sick from 6 weeks until 24 weeks or so, less sick, and she was born at 40 weeks weighing 7 lb 8

just means you have more hormones rushing around, but it won;t affect the size of the baby. no matter how sick you are, teh baby will take what it needs from you, so you will feel worse, but baby will grow fine.. and you will have the size of baby you are meant to have, IFYSWIM....

scrummyfairyontopofthetree · 08/12/2007 14:11

I had no sickness whatsoever - just cravings for roast dinners every night.

DS1 9lb 4oz
DS2 9lb 6oz

JackBlackRoady · 09/12/2007 11:52

thank you for all the replies! i like to think that the sickness means i have a strong pregnancy! i just am getting big already... so i have an excess of hormones... does this explain why as well as being sicky i am also grouchy, ratty, weepy and poor-tempered?!!

my wee one was 4lbs i was sick every day
absolutely no correlation between birth weight and nausea.

beeper · 09/12/2007 17:36

weegle.....did you actually walk again....crosses legs in pain.

stockingfiller · 09/12/2007 17:38

no i dont think the two can be connected i was sick loads and had 8lb5oz dd my sis wasnt sick at all her dd was 8lb 5oz

Peachy · 09/12/2007 17:38

Hospitalised also with ds1, he was 5lb 5oz BUT I also placental problems as a result of eclampsia; other ds's were not huge though and had severe sickness with them.

There is some suggestion that pregnancies with severe MS tend not to miscarry, I don't have any stats on that. The notion is a popular one though.

I shall get you a website, the sickness is miserable and I can at el;ast help with that. Hold on....

Peachy · 09/12/2007 17:39

here ou go- self help tips are excellent

Don't let the GP fob you if you start to get dehydrated, help is possible and available.

Weegle · 10/12/2007 07:49

No sickness with either of mine - 10lbs and 8.5lbs.

JackBlackRoady · 10/12/2007 09:26

Thanks for the website Peachy, and the option of the sunroof Weegle!
I am feeling better as time goes on - 18 weeks now so I MUST be near the end!
