Hi there,

I had a scan at 31 weeks to check the position of the placenta and it's still low anterior. They are going to do another scan to check it again at 36 weeks to check the position again. I am quite concerned as been suffering with a lot of pelvic pain and also had strep b which earlier in pregrancy.I'm hoping it will move by then. They said about doing a internal scan if needed next time but that's all that was siad I'm just hoping my little baby boy will be okay abs get here safely. Has anyone experienced low lying placenta.
Thanks for any comments.

Hi op

Yes I had a low lying placenta and everything was absolutely fine. They saw it at my 20 week scan and said 9 times out of 10 it moves. I then had monthly scans to check it’s positon, including internal ones as they are much more precise(and not at all painful or uncomfortable I should add!). I should also add that it was also really reassuring getting to have monthly scans as most people have their last one at 20 weeks which I think is just insane!
So in my case the placenta didn’t move and I had to have a c section. At first I was disappointed but actually it was the most amazing experience! It was so good to know the date I was going in so we could plan around it. The whole procedure was honestly incredible and the recovery has been so much better than I thought it would be. I’m now actually so thankful i had a stubborn placenta because I loved it all! Good luck and try not to worry! Xx

I did in my first pregnancy. They almost always move up by 36 weeks so try not to worry. I had a scan at 32 weeks and was still low. Had another at 36 and it had moved. It didn’t cause any issues. Hopefully yours will do the same!

Hi, I’m in a similar position. Have you had any bleeding? If you do, go straight to triage.

I’m 31 weeks, was told I had a low placenta at my 20 weeks scan and they were pretty blasé about it. At 26 weeks, I had a heavy bleed and was kept in hospital for 3 nights. They gave me steroid shots in case I needed to have the baby early. Yes it was absolutely terrifying and I’m not saying this to scare you but making you aware of what happens and what you’d need to do should you have a bleed!

Have they told you how low yours is? Mine is completely covering the cervix so I don’t think mine will move, plus mine is posterior which means it’s less likely to do so. I’ve got my 32 week scan next week so hope it will move, but if it doesn’t, as PP said, it will be a planned c-section.

Also just to add I had no bleeding at all during the pregnancy. However the midwife did say to be careful having sex so we just avoided it completely!!

@LouLikesLollies how early did you need to have your c-section? At my 20 week scan I was told the placenta was blocking the cervix and now I’m waiting to see if it will move. The booklet the hospital gave me says they would do the c-section at 34 weeks to avoid going into natural labour?

MadAboutMyBoy · 10/10/2021 12:11

@Jeffers5 34 week seems very early. I think most places would do it at 39 weeks although I ended up having mine at 38+3. They generally wait for the lungs etc to be as well developed as possible. Hope it moves for you although if it doesn’t, like I said earlier, I had a fantastic experience.

Jeffers5 · 10/10/2021 12:23

@MadAboutMyBoy yes I thought the same, I’ve reread it and it says from 34 weeks, but I assume they monitor you throughout that time and only do it that early if necessary.
Hoping it moves, but trying not to think about it too much :)

Hi hope you're well,

Oh I'm sorry to hear that the bleeding sounds awfull and scary. I hope things go well for the rest of the pregrancy and the placenta moves up wishing you all the best.I have a appointment with midwife next week. They did not say they just said it's still low I'm hoping things will change but if not will prob be also have a c section.if it's the safest option I'm happy with that.x

@Mel9489 Hopefully if yours is low lying then maybe it’s not fully covering, which means it could move up with any luck :) Let us know how your next scan goes x

Mine was a partial OS and didn’t move. Had a c section at 38 weeks. All was fine, no bleeding etc during pregnancy. I went into hospital a few days before the section in case of early labour. Hope all goes well for you.
