i had a scan due to reduced movements this week and they've referred me for a gestational diabetes test because he's on the large side! my first was 9lb at term so i don't think i make "small" babies but i'm so nervous. i never has one with my first, does anyone know what they do if you're diagnosed so late in pregnancy? i have no clue what will happen if it comes back positive Smile

This happened to a friend. She did start dietary management but was also booked for induction pretty quickly after (this was around 36/37 weeks I think).

Hope all’s well and the test is normal and that they are just being cautious!

I'm not at all an expert, but I think it's possible the baby might have minor issues with glucose/insulin regulation immediately after birth if you do have GD. They can manage it but I imagine they like to know in advance so they can be prepared.
Hopefully everything is normal though 🤞

I had GD, but was diagnosed at 28 weeks. They’d want you to alter your diet to try and manage it, and you’d be referred to your hospitals GD team. You’ll be given a blood sugar monitor so you can do daily finger prick tests to check your levels stay within range.

I ended up on insulin after 2 weeks, but seeing as though you’re already at 37 weeks I’m not sure what they’d do. I ended up having my c section brought forward to 37 weeks due to being on the insulin, so it might be that if you couldn’t control your legend with diet, they may start you on metformin, but if that also doesn’t help then rather than begin you on insulin they may just induce you early.

My baby had to have blood tests done after birth to check if he was able to maintain his levels. Thankfully he was absolutely fine and we left hospital the following day.

Good luck.

Levels not legend!

Did you not have the gestational diabetes test at 26-28 weeks? What were the results back then?

Butterflyy20 · 07/10/2021 09:37

@AppleBlueberryPie nope i didn't, i didn't have any concerns or "growth issues" until my scan because i had reduced movements, so without that i wouldn't of had one this time either! i've heard it's very late to do them
