Worried about intense movement spell - 37 weeks

I am 37 weeks along today. I was in the car and baby started moving very unusually. Normally my baby is fairly quiet but for 45 minutes, he was twisting and turning and scrambling around and causing a lot of pain - pressure at both ends. There was no interruption and it felt like a crazy squirming.

At one point it felt like he was lying transverse (after having been nicely head down for weeks). Still he is moving and struggling more than usual and is not back in position.

Of course I called triage but the midwife wasn’t helpful - said they only worry about reduced movements.

I’m just very worried about a tangled cord or something. Has anyone experienced the same?

I haven't been through this personally but if it was me I think I would go to triage to be checked out otherwise I know I wouldn't be able to relax. Good luck!

Another one here who would go to triage

RoseAndGeranium · 06/10/2021 18:49

I had a couple of sessions like this in my most recent pregnancy — one while I was on CTG monitoring. The consultant I spoke to on that occasion, who saw the intense movement in action, said that it was nothing at all to worry about and that there was no such thing as too much movement as far as she was concerned. Baby calmed down fine after a while and then moved normally for the rest of the day. Call triage again if you don’t think things are going back to normal in an hour or two, though. Always better safe than sorry.

I'd go to triage too. I was always told that any change in movement should be checked out, not just reduced movements.

I also had a couple of episodes of very active thrashing around at about 40 weeks and also worried about fetal distress. I looked up a couple of papers on this and found something linking intense movements to distress but only when followed by reduced movements/no movement. It went back to normal after a while so I didn’t do anything about it and baby was absolutely fine, but agree with above - if concerned go to triage and check

Kateb47 · 06/10/2021 19:01

@thebookworm1 I would definitely go to triage

RandomMess · 06/10/2021 19:30

Please go to triage any significant change to usual movements should be checked out not just when it's a reduction in movements.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 06/10/2021 19:35

I would definitely get checked out this can be a sign they are in distress

Sunshinegirl82 · 06/10/2021 20:02

I'd call back and say you are anxious about the change in baby's movements and ask them to please monitor you. Sometimes I think it can help just to be upfront. Pregnancy is a very anxious time (at least it was for me!) and I'd be worrying all night if it was me so I'd be pushing to be seen.

loveacupoftea18 · 06/10/2021 20:09

I had this in my first pregnancy. I didn't go in and luckily everything was fine. But the midwife really told me off for not going in and said it's just as important as reduced movements. Please go and get checked for peace of mind.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/10/2021 20:13

My baby was very very active, he'd be doing somersaults as soon as I laid down in bed and as he got bigger it was quite painful: he's non stop at 7 years old now!
But if this is unusual for you, then you need to see your midwife , gp or maternity hospital

Changingtides1234 · 06/10/2021 20:25

It’s not just about reduced movements it’s sudden change in movements. I would go in.

thebookworm1 · 07/10/2021 02:16

The everyone. The midwife said wait for an hour and a half so I did and the movements did stabilise but I’ve been having contractions so I’m wondering if it’s early labour. I might yet go in,

@thebookworm1 how are you?

thebookworm1 · 07/10/2021 19:45

Thanks, having more contractions this evening and intense baby movements although not crazy like yesterday. I’ve downloaded a tracking app to time them.
For some reason I feel like I’ll be getting this every evening for 2 weeks and my baby will not want to come out Shock
