Just need a rant about my work and boss

So as the title says, I need to vent😂 or maybe find someone who is familiar or gone through this situation.

So I work in a fast past supermarket and they want your blood sweat and tears basically. Since I've become pregnant I of course can't do my normal role of baker as I can't lift heavy boxes or go in the -22 freezer. As a new role our caretaker retired so I'm not the new caretaker of the shop and so far it's not been bad as it's basic cleaning.

But now here's the rant, my boss treats me like I'm her pick up after her slave. Which again, fine I'll take for a peaceful life as she's giving me my contracted hours. The air con in work has been broken, so instead of it being chilled it's actually like a sweat box. Which I've raised the issue about and so have many members of staff. But it being hot, there is no ventilation. So therefore a handful of people have come down with a stinking cold. Me included. I powered through 2 8 hour shifts last week when I wasn't feeling great, before it got to my day off and I couldn't lift my head off the pillow. I rang in that evening for my shift the next day. Her exact words "what is exactly wrong with you" knowing people weren't well and 2 people had been off that week with the same reason. But again I can't take anything apart from paracetamol and I truly didn't feel myself.

Today I have gone in and she's completely ignored me. We have morning huddles and in that huddle she mentioned sickness and looked straight at me. She also put a message in the group chat on Saturday thanking those who "picked up the slack" for everyone else and also said 0 sick calls wanted going into this week. She hasn't spoke to me once today, but spoke to everyone else. I was cleaning up my plate on my break and she turned round the corner and walked straight out without saying a word. I felt so uncomfortable today. And I know the first comment will be go to HR, but I don't want the hassle. I just want a normal work environment without feeling uncomfortable for being ill. I stood on self service today for 6 hours straight and when I asked to go to the toilet I was told could I wait. I'm fed up honestly

Does she know your pregnant?

MissH995 · 04/10/2021 15:35

@IactuallyHateMN yes, she knows I'm pregnant. I've had 4 miscarriages in the space of 13 months which my old boss knew about. So told her soon as I had my scan at 7 weeks with my fertility clinic and also about my history of my losses and my concerns going forward ect

She just sounds like a dick tbh! I hate bosses who can't fathom that staff get ill, let alone appreciate staff not coming in a sharing it with everyone. No organisation should run that tight of a ship that someone can't take the odd day or two off without chaos.

It's more than likely the reason why people are ill because no one takes the day off. All coughing on top of each other and with the air con being broken it's just heated in there so it's making it spread more. It was either take one day off or more because that one day rest and my actual day off did me a world of good

Sorry this is happening to you. I work in a supermarket too, some of the things you've said make me think that it's the same chain as you. I don't expect you to say the name of the company but if its the one I'm thinking of, (who have a good reputation for how they support fertility treatment and have recently been bought out) then I'd definitely contact someone higher up even if its not hr. I know you don't want the hassle and I get that but this particular company has very strict policies regarding pregnancy and fertility treatment and are very helpful when managers aren't meeting those. They are not very good at communicating those policies to managers though, so maybe your boss is ignorant to how bad this could be for her. My branch has been absolutely amazing with me, through my fertility treatment as well as now I'm pregnant. I am on checkouts and basically get to decide every shift whether I want to sit on a checkout or stand on self service or a mix of both depending on how I feel that day. They've even given me 10 mins extra break every shift to make sure I've got time to eat a healthy meal instead of whatever I can grab in my short break.
Would it be possible for you to talk with her whilst another manager is there? Just as a mediation sort of thing?
Again, sorry you're going through this, I hope you get it sorted

@Dove88 oh wow, I could only dream for that to be the store I work in🥺 you've struck gold there. And a whole 10 minutes more? A girl can really dream. If they could get me back an extra 10 mins early they would.

And when my old boss left he took our managers with him and our new boss brought hers with her. So doing that outcome would be even more intimidating since they are like a unit. A lot of people who have been in our store since the day of opened and didn't even second guess to want to move have since handed their notice in. Since she's been in charge since august, 4 people have handed their notice in. And I'm hoping that speaks volumes
