Pregnant at 39 😬

I have a 21 year old and a 13 year old, great easy kids and both easy pregnancies with no issues.

I have a new partner who also has kids and we've become pregnant at 39!

It's all so different at this age, so many more things to think about - we have a scan tomorrow as my last period was spotting and the one before that lasted 2 days instead of my usual 5-7 days.

I'm just a bit worried and I don't want to worry my partner.

Has anyone else either had a pregnancy where they still had a period in their first month or had a baby at 39?

I think I'm panicking a bit!

I've just had twins at 39 and it was no different to my Singleton at 32. My age was never really mentioned at all

Snoopy28x · 04/10/2021 11:41

Hey! If it makes you feel better I've just turned 40 and am 7 weeks pregnant 😬 I have 2 yo and 4 yo. So started late anyway.

How are you feeling about it?? I think it's more tiring as you get older, but I'd also like to think we arent to far over the hill just yet 😏 xx

sheusesmagazines · 04/10/2021 11:47

You’ll find loads of women here who’ve been pregnant at that age or more!

I’m 41 and 27 weeks now and all going fine so far and feeling great! I had my first at 38. Age wasn’t ever mentioned the first time. This time there are a few extra things they do but that’s because I’m over 40.

I had a private scan at 7 weeks and a private scan/NIPT at 10 weeks just for peace of mind this time.

Congratulations!

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 04/10/2021 11:49

I think it's pretty normal these days. The only thing I'd be worried about is the fact you're past all the newborn, school phases etc. Do you want to do it all again?!

Sullys82 · 04/10/2021 12:07

Oh gosh thank you everyone! I already feel so much better!

I said before getting pregnant that I didn't want to do it all again as the nappy world seems such a distant memory!

But it's amazing how differently you can feel when the positive result hits you.

It will be a bit strange and I'm still in a bit of shock but the baby will be coming in to such a loving environment as we're really happy and my partner is so excited that I think you know what that's one lucky baby. So I'm excited just a bit worried. Really appreciate the replies 🥰

Haha I read a blog last night that a few years ago one lady at 36 read her own notes and was described as being an old mother!

But you know I think I'm looking forward a bit more in a strange way! How about you? The tiredness is a bit more for sure but I've been running leading up to this (as it was unplanned) and I've taken a couple of weeks off but plan to continue to run if my body allows! X

Am 38, first pregnancy. No one has seemed at all concerned or even interested in my age

Ozanj · 04/10/2021 16:54

I had my first child at 39. It wasn’t considered a big deal.

GinnyBee · 04/10/2021 16:59

My mum was similar to you. She had three kids quite young, then divorced her first husband, met my dad, and had me at 42. My oldest sister was already 26!

All went fine for her except at the end when she was rushed to emergency c-section because of something happening with my heartbeat, but I was anyway born perfectly healthy.

That was 35 years ago... I'm now expecting my first, a bit of a late starter but more and more women seem to wait a bit longer these days before having kids.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/10/2021 17:07

I had my first at 37 I think and currently age 40 and 27 weeks pregnant with number 2!

Babydreams135 · 04/10/2021 17:14

Hi ladies can I join! I’m 38, first baby. 8 weeks 5 days and anxiety is sky high! I have had a few scans and all ok, just wish I could relax! Xxx

Snoopy28x · 04/10/2021 17:47

Yeah the tiredness is real lol also the sick feeling all day! I never had this with other pregnancies. So it's a whole new ball game. I've found I cant look at raw meat without wanting to vomit on the spot. Shopping today was fun lol xx

Moonflower12 · 04/10/2021 17:51

I had my 4th ( surprise- alright bloody great shock) baby at 44. My others were 23, 17 and 16 when she was born.

I was told that a year from now ( she was 3 days old) you'll wonder what you worried about. This was from a wise old midwife, who'd come back from retirement due to a shortage.

One evening sat by the bath whilst DD was having a splash about I recalled the midwife's words and realised she was right.

Oohhh I find out tomorrow the dates but I think I'm about the same around 8 weeks. It's all hit us like a train this news although we're happy!

I just want it to be as normal as when I had kids in my 20s 😬

I'm glad to see other posters put up that it wasn't even an issue though ☺️

I had dd2 at 38. I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 5 months. I had NO symptoms or weight gain. It was a total shock. Dd1 was 23.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 04/10/2021 18:53

Has anyone else either had a pregnancy where they still had a period in their first month or had a baby at 39?

Lots of women have had babies at this age, it’s very common nowadays. No woman has ever had a period whilst pregnant though - the bleeding would be for another reason but fingers crossed that the scan is ok.

Suzi888 · 04/10/2021 18:59

I did Smile conceived at 39,
unknowingly. Was fairly fit beforehand, drank a fair bit of alcohol (which scared me, but GP said it was far too soon to have an effect, had a period or what I thought was a period after conceiving). Had period pains the entire time I was pregnant, which was very unnerving! Walked my dog to ( almost) the end. Worked almost to the end, did use my annual leave to decrease to part time.
Slept ALOT. Ate well, drank lots of water, best skin I’ve ever had lol
Uneventful pregnancy really, no sickness, no aches, no problems, well apart from the mild braxton hicks!

Congratulations on your pregnancy, good luckCake

Suzi888 · 04/10/2021 19:03
  • I presume mine was implantation bleeding, but I honestly thought it was a period. Lasted about three days, I was never a heavy bleeder though.
BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/10/2021 19:03

Lots of people have babies at 39

SparkyBlue · 04/10/2021 19:05

I had a baby at 43. She was the easiest baby of my three children (although going through the terrible twos nowSmileSmile). It's actually great being an older parent you are way more relaxed

BooSaidTheGhost · 04/10/2021 19:30

Congratulations Op! I'm 40 and 11w pregnant with second baby. My eldest from my first marriage is nearly 6 now. I'm having a much easier ride this time, very little sickness. However, tiredness is next level! Trying to eat well but again feel so differently this time - with DD I wanted loads of fruit and salad once the sickness subsided. This time I'm all about meat and carbs. Consultant-led care as apart from my age I'm overweight and so higher risk, apparently. Sickness aside, pregnancy last time was smooth and labour very long but normal delivery. Hoping all will be well in that regard again.

Thanks 😊 yes it's so different so far, the tiredness has hit me like a train the last few days! I'm not happy as I'm not enjoying chocolate as of tonight which is not like me haha!

But really encouraging to see so many positive posts on here about pregnancy at this age.

It's made me feel a lot more at ease ☺️

Skinnymuffin2823 · 04/10/2021 21:33

@SparkyBlue that's what I'm hoping for.., just to enjoy it more and take it all in a bit more than I did before. I really enjoyed being pregnant with my second and hoping for more of that ☺️

Spinxsta · 04/10/2021 22:04

I'm 40 very soon and am currently snuggled with my newborn.

This was by far the easiest of my pregnancies and the only one when I've enjoyed being pregnant!

I had lots of spotting when my period was due but it only last 2 days so I tested and it was positive. I was a bit worried that meant it wouldn't be viable. We were also assessed as higher risk for downs etc so had the harmony test which came back low risk. Other than those two events it was an easy pregnancy.

Congratulations and good luck.
