Blood tinged discharge 10 weeks pregnant

Hi all

I was hoping for some reassurance or otherwise from someone who has experienced what I am going through.

I am 10 weeks 4 days, last reassurance scan at 9 weeks with a wriggly baby with strong heartbeat. I woke up this morning to some pinky/brown tinged discharge and am absolutely beside myself. Midwife advised speaking to Gp, they couldn't ring until the afternoon so went to a and e the other option she suggested. Waited in a and e for hours only to be told they wouldn't test my blood nor give me a scan unless I was bleeding enough to fill a pad and was pretty blunty dismissed. I wasn't wasn't checked internally or for infection.

Since coming home, I had one incident of stringy brown discharge and since then nothing visible visible I wipe, but if I check slightly internally (sorry tmi) any discharge up there is slightly brown tinged, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of discharge full stop (which also worries me as until yesterday had lots of white discharge) and cervix feels extremely low too.

Apologies for long message- has this happened to anyone previously? Would it be worth booking a private scan?

I'm 18 weeks and had this from about 11-16 weeks on and off (fully expect it again tbh)

My midwife said it was very normal and is just old blood passing through

Only time to worry is when it's fresh blood

Mp362 · 01/10/2021 23:52

@redandwhite1 thanks so much for your response. I did wonder whether that could be the case- previous reassurance scans have also shown a haematoma so I wonder if it's that coming out. I guess it's the fact it's combined with less discharge and breasts feeling less sore today (although I never had particularly strong pregnancy symptoms anyway- another source of worry)! Have you had any private scans to check what is going on? Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope things continue to progress well.

Hi, this was the reason I joined mumsnet (to read a thread on this subject!) - I was absolutely fine after similar at 12 weeks. Hope you’re ok!

Mp362 · 02/10/2021 00:07

Hey @Perpop that's really good news, so glad you are doing OK. I hope so too- I am a wreck at the moment, this was such a long awaited for baby for DH and I. Can I ask when you had this how long did it last for?

Perpop · 02/10/2021 00:52

@Mp362 mine only lasted an evening, was quite brown and no cramps etc. I was so worried but had my 12 week scan a few days later and everything was fine! Defo call back midwife if it’s making you anxious, the might agree to see you. Hope everything works out!

Derbee · 02/10/2021 02:24

I think it sounds completely normal. Happened to me around week 10. Having seen a heartbeat, the chance of miscarriage is very low at 10 weeks (I’ve heard around 2%).

I was told that brown is old blood, and nothing to worry about. It’s bright red fresh, heavy blood that is more concerning. Although I bled quite heavily one night after sex, and it was still fine.

Nat6999 · 02/10/2021 03:16

I had this at 15 weeks, my baby is a 6 foot 17 year old now. It is scary but the chances are it will be ok.

Mp362 · 02/10/2021 05:00

@Nat6999 @Derbee thank you so much for sharing your stories, it very reassuring. Discharge is still ongoing, I'm tempted to book a private scan tomorrow so I can at least see what's going on. I have my dating scan in less than 2 weeks but I don't think I can wait that long to see if things are OK. I'm trying so hard to be optimistic (and you have all been amazing at reassuring me so thank you) but it's just difficult isn't it?

Balonzette · 02/10/2021 06:21

It's normal, isn't it?

I remember reading that it's normal and never worried about it

shivbo2014 · 02/10/2021 06:32

I had heavy bleed at 11 weeks they scanned me and said it was a subchronic hematoma and very common.

Mp362 · 02/10/2021 07:35

Thanks for responses ladies. @Balonzette l, when speaking to both a and e and the GP and the midwife, they essentially said it could either be normal or the start of a miscarriage, so could go either way really. I hope it is normal though!

@shivbo2014 sorry to hear you had that experience. I have a haematoma too that was picked up on previous scans so let's hope it's that making its way out.

I have a private scan booked for Sunday morning as I don't think I'll manage to wait until my dating scan to see what's happened. Fingers crossed for happy news.

OP do you have a history of miscarriage? I’m amazed your midwife said go to a&e if you couldn’t see a doctor, I’m actually surprised she suggested GP straight away. I was always told some light spotting/coloured discharge was totally normal.

You’re also getting to the stage where some of the early symptoms start to go for many people so try not to worry about that.

Mp362 · 02/10/2021 08:57

Thanks @Milkbottlelegs I was a bit too. I called hoping for her to say it's normal but the fact she referred me to GP/A and E took me aback and also made me panic. I have had a chemical pregnancy before. Thanks for reassurance on symptoms - glad to hear. Really appreciate all responses.

Hopefully nothing to worry about, but good to get a scan anyway. I had pink, brown, and red discharge (enough to drip onto a liner but not fill it) between week 6-8. I'm 13+2 now and had a reassurance scan yesterday because I started getting pink-red discharge two days ago. Everything was good on the scan and the sonographer said it could just be blood vessels popping at the surface of the cervix/vagina. We have a lot more blood pumping round those areas in pregnancy. He told me not to worry, but it's so hard not to whenever you wipe and see more blood!

Mp362 · 02/10/2021 22:06

@GeorgiaMcGraw it's so tough! Im glad your reassurance scan went OK. There are so many reasons but mind always jumps to the worst. I've been out and walking today and since coming home it seems to have come back with a vengeance, but still only brown mixed in with discharge rather than any fresh blood. Scan at 10.30 tomorrow morning...

GeorgiaMcGraw · 02/10/2021 22:41

@mp362 glad you've got a scan booked, hopefully that will be good and reassuring. My spotting is generally worse after walking. It shifts things along, I suppose, but it won't be creating any more blood, just moving it along more quickly.

Mp362 · 03/10/2021 08:08

Thanks @GeorgiaMcGraw I am so anxious today. Discharge is still going. I think I just need to know either way what is going on.

I do wonder if it was going to be a miscarriage whether it would have developed into proper bleeding by now? It's day 3

Fingers crossed all goes well for you today :)

With my miscarriage I had pains a few weeks before the bleeding started, then around 2 weeks of very light spotting and then slightly heavier bleeding before a MC was diagnosed.
They also found a heartbeat but I always knew something wasn’t right because baby was measuring 2 weeks behind compared to my rates.

Keep us updated and wishing you the best of luck Flowers

Luckyme30 · 03/10/2021 08:21

**dates!

Pesimistic · 03/10/2021 09:24

I've had both out comes with bloody discharge, one case of bloody discharge at 10 weeks no pain (I have a home doppler and could never find the heart beat so I know it wasn't good) a week later more bloody discharge increasing over the week untill I had a miscarage.
Then Tuesday this week with this pregnancy I woke with cramps on one side, and some orange discharge that went to turn pink theough out the day, cramps died down and no more pink discharge, I found the heart beat yesterday so it can be a sign of impending miscarage and in other cases it's just one of those things, I put mine down to a corpus cysts or break through bleed as Iy would have been the day my period was due, this time, but as you had seen the heart beat a weke before chances are your baby is probably fine

shannonl26 · 03/10/2021 16:47

@Mp362 I had brown discharge around the time my period would be due, I’m 12 weeks now! My midwife said it was nothing to worry about as brown = old! I do hope your feeling ok. I hope the scan went ok this morning too. Flowers

Mp362 · 03/10/2021 16:55

Thanks so much for your responses and sharing your stories with me.

@Luckyme30 I am so sorry for what you went through and thank you for sharing f that with me. @Pesimistic it is so hard knowing what it means isn't it it could be anything. And again, so sorry for your miscarriage and I hope everything works out well for you in the future. @shannonl26 thank you- yeah hopefully it is old. I had a but of more pinky discharge this morning.

Thanks also so much for asking how things went. I ended up having a private scan this morning where we saw our baby who was very active and with a heartbeat, measuring at 11 weeks 3 days rather than the 10 weeks 6 days that I'm at, sonographer said jts very encouraging. Also saw my hematoma which looks smaller than before (I think) so I hope it's that making its way out or as the sonographer said one of many other reasons this can happen at this stage. Now to wait a week and a half for my dating scan hoping things stay OK. Really appreciate the support from this lovely community.

@Mp362 that’s amazing news, I’m glad everything went perfectly for you!

Derbee · 03/10/2021 17:41

Great news. You can never totally relax, but I’m sure you’ll have got a lot of peace of mind from seeing the little heartbeat!

Luckyme30 · 03/10/2021 18:58

Fantastic news! So pleased for you :) x
