Catching a cold in the first trimester

Hello everyone, I’m 5+3 and I’m having a real panic!

My partner started coming down with a really bad cold shortly before we knew we were pregnant and, although we’ve kept apart as much as we can for the last few days, I can feel that telltale sore throat developing.

I don’t care how bad I’ll feel really (famous last words), I’m just worried about whether it might increase the risk of miscarriage. I just want to protect the baby. I’ve found it really hard to find an answer online as most articles devote their attention to flu. So, I thought I’d see if anyone had some lived experience?

Also, we’re supposed to have an early pregnancy scan in 6 days (high risk of ectopic). I’ll do lateral flow tests in advance of the appointment, but I’m worried they won’t scan me if I’ve got a cold. Anyone had experience of having scans with a cold?

I feel it’s just such unlucky timing.

You shouldn’t use LFT if you have any symptoms as they can give false negatives.
If either of you have symptoms then you should get PCR tests. I don’t imagine they will scan you without recent PCR test results if you are ill tbh.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

Colds are fine in pregnancy. I understand worrying about everything but this isn’t something you need to worry about.

I don’t know about the scan I’m afraid. If you have covid symptoms they’ll expect you to isolate and get a PCR though I imagine.

You'll be fine.

I was in my first trimester this time 2 years ago. I also had an 18 month old at nursery who brought home every germ known to man. I'm asthmatic and so colds go to my chest and I didn't get rid of one before the next came along, it was awful, for three months. Culminating in getting flu and norovirus the same week just before Christmas. I'll never forget it.

DD2 is 14 months and perfectly healthy - she was 9lb 12 oz and aside from those minor illnesses I had the world's easiest pregnancy.

I will definitely make sure we both get PCR tests as I don't wan't to put anyone at risk.

I'm totally reliant on Dr Google until my first midwife appointment! And, having already had one MC, I'm just so terrified of everything. So I really appreciate your repliesSmile

Don’t worry about a cold, it won’t do anything to the baby.

Have you had your covid jabs? X

Hyggeandhugs · 29/09/2021 07:40

Thanks Smile

Yes, I've had both jabs (Pfizer in June and August) as both my parents are in the extremely clinical vulnerable group and I needed to be able to look after them. So glad I got it out of the way months before my BFP!

Ok that’s great!

I took both during my pregnancy and have had no issues btw ☺️

I had an absolute stonker of a cold in the first trimester with DS. Went to the Dr as I had come out in a massive viral rash he told me parts of your immune system are lower in pregnancy to decrease the chance of miscarriage so you can be susceptible to various colds etc.
