Hi all,

I've had my letter through for my first Midwife appointment next week, and was wondering what to expect? I have no mum friends to ask so thought I'd ask on here Smile

Congratulatuons on your pregnancy!
This is my first pregnancy too and I had no idea what to expect either so its nice to be able to help!

My first appoontment was basically a lot of form filling in! They go over your medical history, some of your partners history. They check as to whether there are any known genetic problems in the family and if so, offer you referral to discuss the impact these may have on you.
Check your height and weight.
Blood pressure check.
Take a urine sample as they check this too.
They will take a blood test so be prepared for this!
They will fill in the first section of your maternity notes with all your details basically and give you a few information leaflets.
They will also give you the paperwork for your prescription exemption.
They do ask about domestic violence and if your partner is there, they may be asked to leave the room.

Its nothing scary, just lots of questions and ticking boxes.
I didnt take my husband with me because the general advice on here was that it was literally admin only, and it was. He wasnt needed.
He has been to all the other appointments with me though.

Hope that helps Smile

The first appointment is all about filling in forms, going through your families health issues etc. My midwife put the form through my door the day before so I could start filling it in as it does take a really long time otherwise!

They also weighed me and measured my height.

The midwife also contacted a high risk consultant for me as we discussed a few issues with my families health that could cause me issues.....

And that was pretty much it! I believe I was there around 50 minutes in total, but maybe longer depending on how quickly you go through the forms Smile

Oh yes and blood tests!

Is it your booking in appt, or your first midwife appt?

The booking in appt was the same as others have said; although mine was over the phone for Covid.

My first midwife appointment was a chat and a urine test. Most of them have been a chat and a urine test! They don’t do Dopplers or bump measurements here until 28 weeks now, so nothing happened until then.

lots of forms, be aware they will ask you about any social services involvement/domestic violence line too -they have too. Took me by surprise the first time!

lots of forms, its very exciting, congratulations!

Thank you everyone! I'm counting down the days 💖 I received 2 letters for 2 appointments, first one next week doesn't specify midwife or booking appointment, just they are offering the appointment which could last for up to 2 hours etc. So could be either? 2nd appointment they have booked for me 2nd November specifies it's the first scan appointment.

Although a website aimed at dad's check out dadmanual.co.uk/12-week-scan-what-to-expect-at-first-pregnancy-scan . It gives a great summary of what happens at each midwife meeting or scan.
