Question for those with experience of GD

I'm 34 weeks. Been feeling like death since week 20. So weak and tired all the time, also breathless and prone to getting overheated.

Been to my GP 5 times, finally got prescribed iron for slightly low levels, been taking iron for 5 weeks (Ferritin was only 11, now up to 25. Haemoglobin was 112 now up to 115) still feel like absolute death. I barely have enough energy to raise my arms.

Asked GP weeks ago to check for gestational diabetes as have also been very thirsty. She refused as I am not overweight and due to blood bottle shortage. She instead performed a finger prick reading - which was normal. 5.6 I think it was. My question is - is that enough to rule out GD?

GD is usually symptomless -it’s not like type 2.
Did you have the GTT? I’d ask your midwife rather than GP.

I had GD which was diagnosed at 28 weeks. I was only tested due to my dad being diabetic. I had no signs or symptoms that I had it.

The finger prick reading of 5.6 is good though.

My fasting readings had to be 5.3 or below, but as I said that was overnight fasting levels.

Otherwise my readings needed to be 7.8 or lower an hour after eating, or 6.4 or below, 2 hours after eating.

Thanks! I suppose I'm desperately searching for a possible reason for feeling the way I do. The fatigue is just indescribable.

I forgot to mention, baby has gone from 50th centile to 90th centile in 4 weeks and midwife also commented on how there is a lot of fluid, so I think that set me thinking too.

I've recently been diagnosed with GD.

There was high sugar levels in my urine a few tests before I did the GTT. I was diagnosed on my fasting bloods being 9.1 didn't even get as far as the glucose drink. In the run up to that diagnoses I was very thirsty always woke up with a very dry throat, peeing a lot and extremely tired but had put it down to pregnancy symptoms. Now I'm in the GD diet, metformin and insulin I still feel those but not to the extreme I did before.

My baby on the growth scan was suddenly in the 97th percentile at 27 weeks.

If your concerned I'd speak to your midwife instead of the GP :)

Thanks @Taenia I will speak to my midwife when I see her for my 36 week appointment. Reason I went to my GP is the midwives are very dismissive and always in a rush, can never get through on the phone either.
