Bump measuring biiiiiig

at my last MW appointment I was measuring in the 97th centile, she said if I continued on this trajectory I’d be sent for a growth scan at my next appointment.
MW appointment tomorrow.

Has anyone measured so big and can tell me what to expect. Did you get induced? Did you need a section? Was your baby as big as they expected?

I’ve no signs of GD and been lucky to have had relatively easy pregnancy - until a few weeks ago when I started getting awful pelvic pain.

98th percentile here

I only got flagged up as big at 35 weeks, got sent for emergency scan .

I was already looking at induction at 39 weeks as I was going to be given specific platelets that had to be ordered in.

I was consultant led from the get go as I have a bleeding disorder, and they didn't want me delivering a baby bigger than 8lb.

I got another growth scan at 37 weeks and another scan without measurements at 38 weeks.

They estimated 7lb 13oz at the 35 week
and 8lb2oz at the 37 week

was given a sweep at 38 weeks ,done feck all, induced at 38+2 failed to progress and had emcs at 38+4 ,baby was 10lb4oz 🙈

no gestational diabetes.

@whoknew23
Jeeeeez. That sounds stressful. Where you closer to a “normal” size before 35 weeks?

I’m currently 32 weeks, MW did say it might balance out and I might not grow much between the two appointments, but I’ve measured myself and definitely gone up a few cm!

Hopefully you and baby are well Flowers

@Reduceddutiesboredom
Hi I'm currently in a similar situation.
I'm pregnant with baby number 4 - 36 weeks but have been convinced from day one that my dates are wrong by 2 weeks.
I've measured consistently big by 2-3cm and the baby has measured 12days bigger than due date (on 3 private scans) which I think is right.
I've got a growth scan today as I'm on the 98th too, no GD or other health problems all my other baby's were born between 39-40weeks and around 8lbs so not had a big baby before.
I shall let you know what they say today and what the plan is going forward.
I'm not risking having a huge baby and there being complications or a c section as my youngest is only 10months old so I'll be requesting a sweep or induction at 38-39weeks if she's not already here.

mooloop · 24/09/2021 13:57

I've not delivered a large baby but just in case it helps, my bump measured literally off the chart at 32w and then 50th centile at 34w - you might be measuring differently tomorrow, it depends so much on different midwives measuring differently too Smile

BurningBenches · 24/09/2021 13:59

I was told DC4 was 9lb at 37wk growth scan (routine in our area) no diabetes.

I was offered induction at 40wks on the basis they didn't want him to be over 5KG and as I always go way overdue (5 births 4 induction) he was looking at being over 5kg/11lb at 42wks.

I opted for induction on the basis I'd only end up being induced 2 weeks later anyway. My body wasn't ready so ended up on the drip, took about 2.5hrs to get contractions going and then labour was 4hrs. Dc3 and dc5 were inductions at 42 and 41wks and took 2hrs each.

Anyway he weighed a mere 9lb5 at 40wks. So they were about a 1lb out and he would likely have only been 10.5lb at 42wks. He had positional talipes from being squashed up in there

Dc5 was supposedly an average sized 6lb 8 at 36wk growth scan, she was 9lb at 41wks

QueenPeary · 24/09/2021 14:05

Yes massive bump both times here. People were asking me if I was about to pop when I was 5-6 months. I had growth scans at around 8 months I think and mostly they were reassuring. I quite one MW "there's nothing wrong with you, your health is fine, you've just got a big fat heifer of a baby!" :o

I had CS both times after attempting labour, and both times babies couldn't get out because their heads were too big, but they were both around 9lb so not that enormous.

I'm actually very happy I had sections though, I'd rather that than traumatic birth and forceps etc.

Fairywings86 · 24/09/2021 14:17

My DS2 was always on the 97th percentile, he was born 1 day late at 8lb 13oz normal vaginal delivery, I did ask at the time was he gonna be big, she said with DS1 been 8lb 12oz, there was no concern or extra scans needed, and that she reckon DS2 was gonna be about the same as DS1, she was off by 1oz 😆 x

Jujujuly · 24/09/2021 14:38

The bump measuring can be way off. I had growth scans with both kids because my bump measured small, the scans then said they were average (50th centile), then when they were born they were actually 75th and 95th centiles! I have a long torso so I think they just hide in there. I was also induced with both (not because of size) and had lovely waterbirths so don’t panic.

CTR1000 · 24/09/2021 14:42

Interestingly at my 28 week appointment recently my bump measured over the 97th centile. Midwife suggested that as long as stayed at this centile throughout they wouldn’t be too bothered, only centile climbed or fell.

And despite this bump is actually pretty small! But I’m tall so suspect it’s growing up rather than out.

Still slightly worried I’m growing a monster baby though! 😂

MaverickDanger · 24/09/2021 14:48

My bump was off the chart, consistently plotting well above the 99th centile.

I was sent for one growth scan at 39 weeks & they said he was about 7lb 12. He was born at 42 weeks at 8lb 3 but very long (55cm) so I think he was lying stretched out rather than curled up most of the time!

ScotsMumOf4 · 24/09/2021 14:49

My fundal height is above 97th percentile so was sent for a growth scan but his head and tummy are on the 60th percentile.
My last baby was measuring much bigger at this point and he was 8lb4oz.
The fundal height is very dependent on your body shape and the way baby is lying at the time. Try not to worry

Reduceddutiesboredom · 24/09/2021 22:10

Thanks everyone!
It’s reassuring to hear that you can measure so big and still have a vaginal delivery and happy healthy babies!

I’m still measuring in the 97th, so waiting on a growth scan appointment - bank holiday weekend means it’ll be Tuesday before this happens which isn’t great for the old anxiety, but trying not to stress.

Don't know about percentiles but I was measuring huge at the end of my pregnancy. I was sent for a growth scan and it turned out the amount of water I had was at the top end of the 'normal' range and they guessed baby would be about 9lb. I went 2 weeks overdue and baby was born weighing 8lb 13oz.

ricketybeauty · 24/09/2021 23:01

I was measuring bang on the 50th centile until about 34 weeks when I had a growth scan due to reduced movements. At 34 and 37 weeks baby was measuring around 98th centile and they were expecting her to be about 9 possibly 10 lb at birth.

Everyone kept telling me that measurements are so unreliable and baby will probably pop out at 7lb. Ended up 11lb 7oz at 40+5 which is completely off the chart.

Fortunately (?) I requested a section after 2 days of labour so didn’t end up torn in two, but I really really wish I had pushed for a scan at 40 weeks rather than the pointless consultant appointments I had. I honestly looked absolutely huge as well, there was no doubt about it and my midwife just didn’t really take me seriously about it.

sparklyblue81 · 24/09/2021 23:06

I was measuring off the chart for bump size at 29 week midwife appointment but baby was right along the 50th centile at my grown scan at 28 weeks 🤷‍♀️ I’m not sure it’s especially accurate as it depends on baby’s position etc x

whoknew23 · 26/09/2021 13:54

@reduceddutiesboredom

nope, I was massive from 30+ weeks 😂😂I had no bump measurements ever .

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/09/2021 14:15

I’m 28 weeks and measuring on the 105th centile…

Midwife seemed unconcerned, she didn’t say anything about growth scans or birth options Confused

Reduceddutiesboredom · 30/09/2021 14:43

@TakeYourFinalPosition
It’s normal (where I am anyway) to be send for a growth scan if frontal height is over the 90th centile two appointments in a row.

@whoknew23 your midwife never measured your bump? I assumed that was standard everywhere.

Had my scan today and baby measuring at 80th centile, big but not too big Smile

Ah thatnks @Reduceddutiesboredom, that's good to know. I seem to have a load of friends who have been sent for a few growth scans after a big/small bump measurement, so I was a bit worried that I'd slipped through the net!

Next measurement isn't for four weeks, so I'm trying not to worry about it too much. I do have a big bump, it seemed to appear from nowhere.

Glad that your scan was good!

cutejeans · 30/09/2021 17:35

Joining the thread as I had my 28 week midwife appointment today and my fundal height measurements are also off the charts!! Got a 30 week growth scan booked in x

4kinhell · 16/10/2021 10:58

Hi just to update I had my baby on Thursday weighing 8lb 4oz which by my dates would have been 1 day overdue hospital dates
9 days early.
At the hospitals growth scan at 35week they estimated her to be 7lb 7oz so not always correct
